MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore Tony Martignoli (Santa Rosa, Calif.) threw for a career-high 340 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Nichols College's 44-22 loss at Morrisville State Saturday afternoon in non-conference football action at Drake Field.
Martignoli completed 28-of-51 pass attempts and also led the Bison with 49 yards on the ground. Senior Michael McCourt (New Fairfield, Conn.) led all student-athletes with 117 receiving yards while freshman Eric Mooney (Stoneham, Mass.) notched six receptions to lead the Bison. On the other side of the ball, senior captain Brett McEvoy (Wrentham, Mass.) had nine tackles while junior Princewell Iwejuo (Boston, Mass.) was next with eight. Fellow junior Zach Fashaw (Bronx, N.Y.) picked up his first collegiate interception.
Nichols racked up 427 yards of total offense but surrendered 430 as junior Brandon Gwinner (Schenectady, N.Y.) compiled 317 yards of total offense for the Mustangs (164 rush, 153 pass) and three touchdowns (two rush). Defensively, sophomore Michael Bodnar (Miller Place, N.Y.) racked up a game-high 13 tackles and also intercepted Martignoli once.
Nichols fell behind 14-0 less than three minutes into the contest before touchdowns from freshman Jean Saint-Vil (Everett, Mass.) and junior Jacob Duffrene (Boston, Mass.) gave Nichols a 15-14 lead; Dufrene's score capped a six-play, 99-yard drive, sparked by a 73-yard completed from Martignoli to McCourt. Following a touchdown reception from Mooney that gave Nichols a 22-21 lead at the 8:47 mark of the second quarter, the Mustangs scored the final 23 points of the game.
Today's game marked the inaugural meeting between Nichols College and Morrisville State. The Mustangs now lead the series, 1-0.
