BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern football team suffered its first home loss of the year on Saturday, falling to undefeated University of Chicago, 28-14, on Battle Field at Panther Stadium.

The Panthers fell to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the Southern Athletic Association, while the Maroons moved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the SAA.

UC running back Chandler Carroll had an outstanding game, rushing for 245 yards and three touchdowns.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Maroons got on the board 15 seconds into the second quarter on Carroll's first score, a one-yard dive into the end zone.

BSC answered three minutes later on a 55-yard pass from Courtney to sophomore receiver Jamal Watkins, tying things up at 7-7.

The tie stood for only 54 seconds, as Chicago scored on the second play of its next drive, this time on a 53-yard Carroll run. The Maroons would take the 14-7 lead into the halftime break.

The teams traded touchdowns again in the third quarter, with the Maroons pulling ahead 21-7 on a 25-yard fumble return by Chris Dengler before Watkins scored on a 57-yard pass from Courtney, cutting it to 21-14.

The Panthers got the ball back quickly on the ensuing drive, with junior Matt Franks snagging an interception, and the ball changed hands twice again after that on two more interceptions. BSC's second pick was by freshman Matthew Byers at the 5:27 mark of the quarter.

Chicago would score the final touchdown of the game at the 11:15 mark of the fourth quarter on a 45-yard run by Carroll.

Courtney finished the game with 247 yards and two touchdowns, going 16-29, while Chicago quarterback Burke Moser was 12-28 with 149 yards.

Junior Samir Usman was BSC's leading rusher with 60 yards on 14 carries, while Watkins led with 119 receiving yards and two touchdowns on three catches.

BSC freshman kicker Ryder Andrews was 2-2 on extra points but 0-1 on field goal attempts. UC's Karol Kurzydlowski was 4-4 after touchdowns but also 0-1 on field goals.

Franks and senior Alex King led the Panther defense with 12 tackles apiece. Vincent Beltrano led Chicago with 13 tackles and three interceptions.

BSC travels to face Hendrix next weekend in Conway, Ark., before returning home on Oct. 17 to take on Millsaps for Homecoming 2015. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. on Battle Field.
