Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team made the most of its return to the Cru's home field as UMHB opened the home schedule with a 65-12 victory over Millsaps College Saturday evening in Belton. The 4th-ranked Cru improves to 2-0 on the season and stretches its regular season winning streak to 56 consecutive games with the win. The Majors drop to 1-1 on the year with the loss.
UMHB drove 61 yards in four plays on its opening possession and Zach Anderson hit Wykeyhe Walker with a 37-yard touchdown toss to open the scoring just 2:14 into the game. Jacob O'Neill added a 46-yard field goal on the next drive and Duane Thompson scored on an 11-yard run to give the Cru a 17-0 lead after the first quarter. Blake Jackson threw touchdown passes of six yards to Walker and 12 yards to Lin Gillham and Malcolm Miller rumbled 20 yards for another score as UMHB stretched the lead to 39-0 at the half.
Chance Clowers threw a four-yard TD pass to Beau Wells on the opening drive of the second half to cut the Cru lead to 39-6 on the first touchdown surrendered by the UMHB defense in more than seven quarters. The Cru answered with Jackson's three-yard score dash and O'Neill's 29-yard field goal to make it 49-6 after three quarters. John Mowery hit a 21-yard field goal and Zane Boles scored on a 37-yard run before Clowers threw a 20-yard scoring pass to Zach Borne. Sterling Scott closed out the scoring when he raced 40 yards for a touchdown in the final seconds to provide the final margin.
The Cru rolled up 605 yards of total offense in the game with 363 of those coming on the ground. UMHB turned the ball over just once, but did commit 10 penalties for 121 yards. The Cru defense held the Majors to 38 yards rushing and 153 yards of total offense while forcing two turnovers and posting five sacks.
Jackson threw for 116 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 46 yards and another score. Six players ran for 40 or more yards, led by Malcolm Miller's 55. Walker caught five passes for 87 yards and two scores and Gillham and Scott both scored their first varsity touchdowns for UMHB. Matt Cody, John Thorne and Brazos Fuller led a balanced defensive effort with six tackles apiece and Fuller added 2.0 sacks and 3.0 tackles for loss.
Clowers threw for 104 yards and two touchdowns for Millsaps. Raphael Johnson ran for 36 yards on 14 carries and Borne had three catches for 33 yards. Eric Martin and Jared Bullock had nine tackles apiece to lead the Majors defense.
UMHB will continue its four-game home stand with another non-conference game next Saturday at Crusader Stadium. The Cru will host Wisconsin-La Crosse (1-1) for a 6:00 PM kickoff in that contest.
