SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Western New England University football coach Keith Emery Wednesday announced that Kevin Cook, a 2014 USA College Football Division III Preseason All-America second team pick on offense, will serve as a team captain for the Golden Bears this season.

Cook, a senior-to-be running back out of Hamburg, N.J. (Wallkill Valley High School), enters his final year in the Golden Bears' backfield with an opportunity to become the program's all-time leading rusher. Currently in third place with 2,862 yards rushing, Cook needs 540 to break the WNE career record of 3,401 by Marvin Langley, set from 1998 to 2001.

"Kevin is the consummate captain," Emery said. "He works harder than anyone else on the team, conveys a belief in himself, the team and to his teammates, and is always willing to share the credit. He is at his best during tough times."

Cook rewrote the Golden Bear single-season record book during his junior campaign with a career year across the statistical board with 1,282 yards rushing on 264 attempts for a 4.9-yard average and 20 touchdowns, earning second-team all-America accolades from USACollegeFootball.org. The All-NEFC First Team Offense member led the conference in TDs, ranked second in both carries and yardage, and placed fourth in average per rush. He churned seven 100-yard games, including his last four appearances.

A criminal justice-criminal investigation major, Cook has been WNE's offensive MVP in each of the past two seasons.
