BETHLEHEM, PA. – Former Wesley College quarterback Shane McSweeny threw for four touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks to a 49-38 victory over the Trenton Freedom on Saturday night in the National Conference Title Game. McSweeny and the Steelhawks will play for their first-ever The PIFL Championship next weekend against the Nashville Venom inside the Nashville Municipal Auditorium on Saturday, July 12 at 8pm EST.
A 2011 First Team All-American for the Wolverines, McSweeny, Wesley's all-time leader in completion percentage (62.1%) and passing efficiency (168.3), threw for 278 yards on 16-of-24 passing while also gaining 30 yards on the ground.
Tied at 24 going into the third quarter, McSweeny led the Steelhawks on a 49-yard scoring drive, culminating in a touchdown pass before helping Lehigh Valley to a field goal after the defense forced a turnover. Trenton found the endzone on its ensuing possession but a one-yard scoring run by McSweeny with 3:15 left nearly sealed the game.
Trenton answered right back with a score just under two minutes later but McSweeny hooked up with wide receiver Troy Pascley (Louisville) with 42 ticks left to cap off the day.
