UMHB's Pete Fredenburg named Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year

More news about: Mary Hardin-Baylor

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (January 6, 2014) – After a season complete with a fourth consecutive undefeated regular season, a ninth outright American Southwest Conference title, and a twelfth NCAA playoff berth, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Head Football Coach Pete Fredenburg today received the ultimate reward for his positive impact on his Crusaders players, school, and community.  Liberty Mutual Insurance, in partnership with the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame, announced Coach Fredenburg as the 2013 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award winner for Division III.  The Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award is the leading college football honor recognizing coaches for their responsibility, integrity, sportsmanship and excellence, on and off field.

As Coach of the Year, Liberty Mutual will award Coach Fredenburg $50,000 to support his favorite charities and $20,000 in scholarship to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Alumni Association.  Coach Fredenburg has selected the Ronald McDonald House and McLane Children's Hospital, both in Temple, Texas; Helping Hands Ministry of Belton; and the Wounded Warrior Project as his award beneficiaries.  Since 2006, Liberty Mutual Insurance has provided more than $2 million to support charities and alumni association scholarship funds on behalf of its Coach of the Year winners.

"This is truly an honor and on behalf of so many people, our players and coaches, administration and trustees, and our faculty, staff, students and fans, I want to thank Liberty Mutual," Fredenburg said. "We stress to our players to make a difference on campus and in their community and we encourage them to be involved. To be able to support these local charities and our students through the generosity of Liberty Mutual just means so much to me and to our program, the University and the entire community."

Coach Fredenburg's superior season and commitment to his players and community elevated him above a group of five Division III coach finalists through fan votes cast December 10-22 at CoachoftheYear.com and ballots from elite selection committees of national media and College Football Hall of Fame players and coaches.  Fans votes contributed 20 percent to each coach's final score, and the media and College Football Hall of Fame accounted for 25 percent and 55 percent, respectively.  The other 2013 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year winners are Gus Malzahn, Auburn (FBS); Craig Bohl, North Dakota State (FCS); and Curt Wiese, Minnesota Duluth (Division II).

"We are excited to stand with the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame, as well as Crusaders fans, to recognize Coach Fredenburg's role in helping his student-athletes achieve their full potential on and off the field of play," said Jim MacPhee, senior vice president and Chief Marketing Officer, Liberty Mutual Personal Insurance.  "Each year, our winners are able to positively impact their schools, communities and beyond through our award, and we are excited to further support Coach Fredenburg's good work as a Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year."

This year's 13-win campaign saw the Cru advance to the national semifinals, losing by a point to eventual champion Wisconsin-Whitewater, and rank second in the season-ending D3football.com national poll.  The only football coach in the 16-year history of the UMHB program, Coach Fredenburg has compiled a 159-35 record, has won or shared 11 ASC titles, and is an eight-time conference Coach of the Year.  He has coached 13 AFCA All-Americans, 91 All-Region selections and 297 All-Conference players.  Equally impressive are the achievements his players have earned in the classroom:  five Academic All-Americans, 12 Academic All-District players, and 147 Academic All-Conference selections during his tenure at UMHB.

Off the field, Coach Fredenburg's teams are always visible throughout the Belton community.  The Cru participate in reading programs and career days at three local schools, they participate in Special Olympics events, and volunteer at five youth football camps.  Coach Fredenburg participates in local charity golf tournaments and road races to benefit the Ronald McDonald House, the Ft. Hood Wives, and the McLane Children's Hospital Scott & White in Temple.
