Johns Hopkins' Arena, Bonaddio, DiTrolio Earn 1st Team Academic All-America Honors

2013 Capital One Division III Academic All-America Football Team Get Acrobat Reader

BALTIMORE, MD - Fresh off one of the most successful seasons in school history, the honors continue to roll in for members of the Johns Hopkins University football team as three players have been named to the 2013 CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America Division III Football Team, it was announced today. Seniors John Arena (Bryn Mawr, PA/St. Joe's Prep), Vincenzo Bonaddio (Garnet Valley, PA/Salesianum) and Joe DiTrolio(Newtown Square, PA/Malvern Prep) all earned First Team Academic All-America honors, making Johns Hopkins one of just two schools in the nation to have three or more players named to the first team.

In addition to earning First Team Academic All-America honors for the second consecutive year, Arena was also named the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for Division III football.

The three selections are tied for the most in school history (2011) and boost Johns Hopkins' all-time Academic All-America count for football to 20, 18 of which have come since current head coach Jim Margrafftook over in 1990 and 13 of which have come since 2003. This is the third consecutive year the Blue Jays have produced at least two Academic All-Americans and the first time Johns Hopkins has produced multiple first team selections.

Arena, an outside linebacker in JHU's 4-4-3 defensive alignment, is just the second Johns Hopkins football player to earn First Team Academic All-America honors twice and is the first to earn the prestigious Academic All-American of the Year award. In addition, he joins Kathy Darling (Women's Track & Field/Cross Country in 2002-03) and John Kegelman (Men's At-Large-Swimming in 2008-09) as the only Johns Hopkins athletes in any sport to be tabbed the Academic All-American of the Year in their respective sport and he is just the sixth Blue Jay - regardless of sport - to twice earn First Team Academic All-America honors.

Arena will graduate later this month with a degree in neuroscience and currently boasts a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average. He was recently named to the 2013 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Class, an award that carries an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. A First Team All-Centennial Conference selection this season, Arena finished second on the team in tackles (48) and third in tackles for loss (9.0) and sacks (5.5). He added two interceptions (one of which he returned for a touchdown), one pass breakup and one forced fumble and finished his career with 163 tackles, 22.5 tackles for losses, 10.5 sacks and six interceptions.

Bonaddio makes the jump to the first team this season after earning Second Team CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America last season. Bonaddio carries a 3.82 cumulative grade point average with a double major in earth and planetary science and public health and is the first offensive lineman in school history to twice earn Academic All-America honors.

A unanimous First Team All-Centennial Conference selection at offensive tackle, Bonaddio anchored an offensive line that led the way for a unit that averaged 40.5 points and 500.6 yards per game this season; both of those marks are school single-season records. Johns Hopkins averaged more than 260 yards rushing (260.9) and 230 yards passing (239.7) in the same season for the first time in school history in 2013.

A Second Team All-Centennial pick a year ago, Bonaddio has volunteered with YO! Programs Eastside as a tutor in math and writing to help young adults get their GED and has also volunteered with JHU's Pen Lucy tutoring program with inner city children.

DiTrolio earned First Team Academic-District honors last season and makes his first appearance on the Academic All-America Team this year. He is the seventh defensive lineman in school history to earn Academic All-America honors and just the third to earn first team status.

The anchor of the Blue Jays' defensive line from his spot at nose guard, DiTrolio boasts a 3.65 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in economics. The two-time Second Team All-Centennial Conference selection finished fourth on the team - and first among defensive linemen - with 44 tackles and added 6.0 tackles for losses and 2.5 sacks this season. He finished his career with 107 tackles, 13.5 tackles for losses and 6.5 sacks. With DiTrolio holding down the middle of the line, Johns Hopkins allowed just 100.2 yards per game on the ground and just 2.8 yards per rushing attempt.

DiTrolio served as a management consulting intern at the Philadelphia office of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) last summer and has already accepted job there. He is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Financial Analysts Club at Johns Hopkins.

Under Margraff's guidance, the Blue Jays posted a 10-1 record, won a fifth consecutive Centennial Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the third straight year. Johns Hopkins was ranked in the top 25 throughout the 2013 season by both the American Football Coaches Association and D3football.com.
