More news about: Union

SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior quarterback Brendan McGlynn rushed for two touchdowns to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to a 31-28 victory over Union College at Frank Bailey Field Saturday. In the 111th meeting in New York State's oldest collegiate rivalry, the Engineers won the Dutchman Shoes Trophy for the first time since 2010.

Andrew Armato rushed for 87 yards and a score and Logan Gaddar had 57 yard receiving on five catches. RPI forced a key late game fumble and three interceptions and recorded 322 yards in offense. Ted Abriel had nine tackles and Anthony Pilla had a sack and joined Colby Tragni with seven tackles each for RPI (5-5, 2-5 in Liberty League).

Union, which honored 20 seniors prior to the final home game and final contest of 2013, finished 3-7 and 3-4 in league play. T.J. Franzese had 74 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown and Ryan Shilling had seven catches for 82 yards. Connor Eck, who came in off the bench at QB, was 13 for 18 with a touchdown and 148 yards. Thomas Hayes had a game high 10 tackles. The Dutchmen recorded 346 yards in offense.

Union took a 28-24 lead when Eck hit Andrew Baker for a 27 yards touchdown with 7:05 left in the fourth, capping a five play, 49 yard drive in 2:13. But on the next drive, starting at the RPI 18, the Engineers took nine plays and 4:02 off the clock and McGlynn rushed in from the two with 2:28 left. Union took over at the 25 after the kick but on the first play, a fumble was recovered after a pass at the Union 20 by Phil Lanieri and at 2:50, the drive ran out the clock.

RPI opened the scoring when Armato ran in from 24 yards out on a third-and-two with 9;51 left in the first quarter to cap a six play, 59 yard drive. Union tied it on a 59 yard drive in six plays after the kickoff as Franzese ran in from a yard out with 6:44 remaining in the quarter. But with just 41 seconds left in the quarter, Andrew Franks booted a 26 yard field goal for a 10-7 RPI lead. The 14 play, 65 yard drive ate up nearly six minutes of the quarter.

Union's drive that began in the final minute of the first ended with 11:43 left in the second. On a fourth and nine set up for a field goal attempt, Joe Vito instead took the snap and found Joe Flannery for a 10 yard touchdown reception to wrap up a 12 play, 75 yard drive in 4:06 and give Union a 14-10 lead. RPI regained the lead when Nick Borkowski intercepted a Union pass at the Dutchman 40 yard line and returned the pick-six for a 17-14 lead with 9:21 left.

After the kick, three plays later, another RPI interception gave the Engineers strong field position. Colby Tragni picked off a pass at the Union-27 and got it to the 23, and six plays later McGlynn ran in from a yard out for a 24-14 lead with 5:32 left in the half.
The start of the third featured a Union drive starting at the home 25, and in 75 yards and 16 plays in nearly half of the quarter (7:17), Vito rushed in from a yard out on a fourth and goal to pull Union to within three at 24-21, the score after three.

This was the 64th meeting playing for the trophy, and Union now holds a 47-17 lead since the trophy was implemented in 1950.
