Union hosts RPI for The Dutchman Shoes Trophy in one of nation's oldest rivalries
SCHENECTADY, NY -- The oldest collegiate football rivalry in the State of New York will add another chapter to the legendary story on Saturday. The Union College football team hosts Renssalear Polytechnic Institute on November 16 at 12:07 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field.
The series is the fifth oldest in NCAA Division III and 16th longest in terms of games played in NCAA Div. III. According to the Union record books, the Dutchmen hold an 81-25-4 lead in the series. This will be the 64th meeting since the introduction of "The Dutchman Shoes Trophy." Union is 47-16 in the series since the introduction of the trophy in 1950. Union states that the series began with a 4-0 win over RPI in Albany on Nov. 19, 1886. Union's win in 2009 prevented the Engineers from winning a fourth straight game in the series for the first time ever. Union will be looking for a third straight win in 2013, which has not happened since the Dutchmen won four straight from 1993 through 1996. In home games for The Dutchman Shoes Trophy, Union is 15-3 at Bailey Field (18-3 including when it was known as "Astroturf Field" in 1982, '84 and '86),
Union (3-6 overall) will honor 20 seniors prior to the final game of the 2013 season and final games of their careers. Last week, Nick Becker tossed for 308 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-14 win at Merchant Marine, to even the Dutchmen's Liberty League record to 3-3. Josh Callahan had four catches for 102 yards, and Jake LaRovera made 11 tackles. RPI comes off a 35-28 home defeat to Springfield and stands 4-5 overall and 1-5 in league play.
