Dietrich, Venier Collect Weekly ECFC Special Teams, Rookie Awards
GAITHESBURG, Md. (November 11, 2013) – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference announced its weekly awards for the 10th week of the 2013 football season with the Maritime Privateers having two of the four selections for the week.
Sophomore kicker Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) was announced as the league's top special teams player after his career afternoon during Saturday's win over Mount Ida. This was the fourth time this season that Dietrich was selected as the league's top specialist. For the fourth time this season, the Privateers have had the ECFC's top rookie as safety Thomas Venier (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) was selected for weekly honors for the first time in his career.
Dietrich had his best career-game in kicking field goals as he converted on his three chances for three points, while leading the team with 10 points in its 16-7 win over Mount Ida on Saturday. Dietrich collected three field goals, from the lengths of 30, 32 and a career-best 44-yard field goal. His 44-yarder was also the third longest field goal in Privateer history. On kickoffs he amassed 215 yards on five kickoffs for a 43.0-yard average on kickoffs.
Venier had his best game of the season on Saturday afternoon against Mount Ida as he led the Privateer defense with a career-high eight tackles against the Mustangs. Venier also picked off a pass in the first half stopping a Mustang drive and had three key tackles late in the fourth quarter of the 16-7 victory. The interception was the first of his career.
Maritime will return to the field this Saturday to wrap up its 2013 season at home when the team takes on Gallaudet at 1 p.m. on Reinhart Field. Coverage of the game will begin approximately 10 minutes prior to kickoff on the Privateer Radio Network.
