Berry falls to Sewanee in season finale

More news about: Berry

ROME, Ga. – Cortez Brown scored two touchdowns as Sewanee defeated Berry College, 28-6, on Saturday at Barron Stadium.

The Tigers improved to 3-6 and 2-3 in the Southern Athletic Association. The Vikings ended its inaugural football season with a 1-9 and 0-6 record.

BC, however, likely had its best game of the year. The Vikes led in first downs (21-19), total offense (369-357) and passing yards (285-102).

"It was a tough physical game and we are proud of the way we competed," said Head Coach Tony Kunczewski. "We expect to pick up where we left off and start 2014 off with a good note."

Wide receiver Christopher Lilly caught eight receptions for 165 yards for Berry. Quarterback Adam Sandin was 20-36 for 286 yards passing. On defense, Anthony Batey had a game-high 15 tackles (10 solo).

Yet the home team was felled by three Sandin interceptions, penalties and an inability to convert in the red zone.

"We moved the ball well between the twenties, but obviously we struggled inside the 20-yard line," Kunczewski said.

The Tigers capped a 16-play 78 yard drive with 2:44 left in the first quarter. Cortez Brown caught a 17-yard pass from Curtis Johnson for the touchdown.

Johnson called his number for Sewanee's next score. He capped a six-play, 80-yard drive with a seven yard rush. The score was 14-0 at halftime. Johnson was 3-5 passing with one score and ran for 79 yards and one TD.

Neither team scored in the third quarter. With 10:38 remaining in the final period, Brown scampered seven yards for another Tiger TD. Backup QB Cody Daniel passed for a 17-yard touchdown to Caleb Beasley for its last tally.

Despite earlier missed opportunities, the Vikings were determined to score its first home TD against a varsity opponent. Sandin moved the team 71 yards in 11 plays and capped it off with connection on a fade pattern to Will Chomskis, which covered 10 yards.

The game's final touchdown came with no time on the clock. By rule an extra point could not be attempted and the score ended 28-6.
