#6 Hobart downs Union, 41-20
SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior running back Steven Webb ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns to lead #6 Hobart College to a 41-20 Liberty League football victory at Union College's Frank Bailey Field Saturday. The Statesmen now stand 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchmen fell to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in league play.
Webb had 23 carries and recorded his 14th career 100 yard game for Hobart. Quarterback Patrick Conlan was 10 for 18 for 194 yards with two touchdowns and an interception and Elvin Souffrant caught five passes for 94 yards. Troy Robinson had four for 52 yards with a TD and John Fasano had a 48 yard TD reception for Hobart. Cory Davis led the guests with eight tackles and Trayvon Toney and Devin Worthington added seven tackles each while Gabriel Smith blocked two punts, returning one for a touchdown.
Union quarterback Nick Becker, making his third career start and second at home, was 25 for 41 with 202 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Brian Havlicek caught five balls for 69 yards and was one of 11 Dutchmen receivers. Joshua Callahan added 50 yards on three receptions. T.J. Franzese led the Union ground game with 45 yards on 12 carries. Tyler Valenti posted a game high nine tackles and Casey Muse had eight with 1 1/2 tackles for losses.
Hobart recorded 377 yards in offense and Union finished with 355. The teams also were flagged for 19 penalties (9 for Hobart) for 185 yards (101 for the Statesmen.
Hobart opened the scoring with 7:51 left in the first quarter. Conlan found Troy Robinson for a 26 yard scoring strike to cap a five play, 40 yard drive that took 2:24. The drive started when Smith blocked a Union punt and started the drive at the Union 40. With 6:08 left in the first quarter, Hobart went three plays and 75 yards in just 1:14. Conlan hit Fasano with the 48 yard touchdown with 5:00 left and it remained 14-0 after the first quarter.
Franzese cuaght a six yard pass from Becker with 3:52 gone in the second quarter but the kick failed and it was 14-6. The nine play, 33 yard drive lasted 3:16. But Hobart scored twice more in the half. On the ensuing drive the Statesmen went 56 yards in 2:46 and the eight play of the drive was a Webb rush from three yards out with 8:18 left. Union started the next drive at the U-44 but on a 4th and 18 from the Union 36, Smith blocked another punt and at the 18 and this time, took it in for the touchdown for a 28-6 lead. Union got to the Hobart 20 but had an incompletion on fourth down with 1:53 left in the first half.
Brad Burns' two yard run with 8:11 left in the third made it 35-6 after a three play, 27 yard drive in 1:20. The drive started at the Union 27 after a fumble was recovered by Hobart's Mark Guarino-Hyde. From the Union 5, Conlan was intercepted by Union's Jake LaRovera and the Dutchmen started at their own three yard line with 3:58 left in the third. But Zach Thornton picked off a Union pass at the Dutchmen 10, and Webb ran it in three plays later for the 41-6 lead. Becker found Matt Meile with a five yard touchdown pass with 1:28 left in the third to conclude a five play, 80 yard drive in 1:37.
The only scoring of the fourth came when reserve quarterback Blake Geller led Union 94 yards on 12 plays in 3:52. He completed a pass to Tosin Kazeem for five yards with 29 seconds remaining the fourth quarter.
Union will travel to Kings Point, NY next week for a November 9 game at the United States Merchant Marine Academy and a 12 p.m. start. Hobart returns home to host St. Lawrence November 9 at 12 p.m.
