Knights Win Fifth-Straight with Victory over Spartans

More news about: Wartburg

DUBUQUE, Iowa-- The Wartburg football team (6-1 overall, 4-0 IIAC) won its fifth-straight game with the 22-15 win over Iowa Conference opponent, Dubuque (4-3, 3-1) to remain as the only undefeated team in conference play.

After senior Jake Holsteen (Mediapolis) caught a 17-yard pass from classmate Taylor Jacobsmeier (Wapello) with 0:35 remaining, the Spartans had the ball on their own 27-yard line with 0:31 to play.

Dubuque brought the ball to the Wartburg 48 but an interception by junior Andrew Ganshirt (Dubuque) helped seal the win.

The Spartans were the first team on the board as they scored a safety in the first quarter after they blocked a Wartburg punt in the end zone.

Dubuque tried to extend its lead in the second quarter, but was unsuccessful on a 44-yard field goal attempt.

Jacobsmeier gave the Knights the 6-2 lead as he kept the ball himself for a four-yard touchdown run and the score was 7-2 after sophomore Michael Bohlke (Manchester) made the extra point kick.

In the third quarter, the Spartans took the 8-7 lead as quarterback Bryan Bradshaw ran it in from five-yards out, but were unsuccessful on the two-point conversion.

Holsteen scored his first touchdown of the day on the Orange and Black's ensuing drive, this one for a three-yard reception. Wartburg was successful on its two-point conversion as junior Donald Miller (Maywood) caught Jacobsmeier's pass.

The Spartans knotted the score on their next drive to make the score 15-15.

The Knights got the ball back on their own 32-yard line late in the fourth quarter and constructed a seven play, 68-yard drive to take the 22-15 lead.

Jacobsmeier led the Orange and Black in all-purpose yards as he had 87 yards on the ground and 70 through the air.

Holsteen led all receivers with four catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns and set new career marks in every category.

Junior Drew Kooi (Minooka, Ill.) led all defenders with his career-best 12 tackles (five solo and seven assist). Classmate Chase Kloepfer (Cedar Rapids) had 4.5 sacks for a loss of 34 yards.

Wartburg returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Coe at 1 p.m.
