Business as usual as Heidelberg defeats Muskingum 49-21

More news about: Heidelberg

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – After an off week last Saturday, it was business as usual for the Heidelberg University football team. The Student Princes scored 42 points in the first half and departed with a 49-21 win at Muskingum on Saturday afternoon.

Cartel Brooks continued his unparalleled play with four touchdowns and 235 yards of total offense. The junior from Galion has 13 touchdowns in his last three games.

Brooks started the scoring for Heidelberg with a 49-yard touchdown rush. He ran right, hurdled a Muskie and sprinted for the end zone. Dan Kilger's first of seven extra points gave Heidelberg a 7-0 lead.

After the teams traded punts, Michael Mees found Donteea Dye racing down the field. Dye caught the pass, broke a tackle and waltzed past the goal line.

Andy Kujawa recorded his first interception on the year on the ensuing Muskingum drive. The pick set up a 42-yard touchdown pass from Mees to Brooks.

In the second quarter, Brooks scored again, this time on a 38-yard rush. The touchdown was the 41st rushing touchdown of Brooks' career, which surpassed the Heidelberg record set in 1952 by Paul Yackey.

Zack Felton forced a Muskingum fumble on the next drive, which was recovered by Adam Cepik. The Berg turned it into seven points. Brooks and Mees connected again, a 38-yard touchdown pass, to give Heidelberg a 35-0 lead. Brooks had 155 yards rushing and 80 yards through the air.

Christian Dominguez closed out the scoring in the first half. The senior hauled in a pass from Mees and scored from six yards out. Mees finished with 241 yards and four touchdowns on 10-of-16 passing.

After the intermission, the Fighting Muskies (1-6, 1-5 OAC) showed their mettle. Dominick Williams danced, reversed fields and broke several tackles on his way to a 74-yard punt return to put Muskingum on the board.

On the next Heidelberg possession, a punt snap sailed over the head of punter Stephen Smith, who fell on it at his own 2 yard line. Desmond Waden punched it in on the next play, and despite trailing 42-14, Muskingum had momentum.

The Student Princes weathered the storm, though. Just before the end of the quarter, Jose Sanchez found the end zone on an 11-yard rush. His score capped off a 12-play, 89-yard drive, during which Sanchez carried the ball eight times. The drive was aided by a 15-yard targeting penalty against Muskingum's Tristan Heath. Heath was ejected from the game and, by rule, will not be eligible for the first half of Muskingum's next game.

The Muskies added a fourth quarter touchdown on a 28-yard pass from Cody Williams to James Washington.

Heidelberg outgained Muskingum 550 to 189 in total offense.

"We were a little better today," said head coach Mike Hallett. "We did a really good job defensively, ran the ball well, and Mike (Mees) hit some opportune passes for us."

The win pushes Heidelberg to 7-0, 6-0 in the OAC and sets up showdown against Mount Union next week in Tiffin.

"They are a very good football team," said Hallett, talking about No. 1 Mount Union. "We're going to have to do a good job in preparing for them next week."

The Mount Union – Heidelberg game will kick off at Mayer Field in Tiffin at 1:30 p.m. and gates will open at noon. No presale tickets will be sold.
