THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – All even 6-6 at halftime, Cal Lutheran pulled away in the third quarter with a pair of touchdowns for a 20-6 win over the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team on Saturday afternoon at Rolland Stadium in conference play. The loss drops CMS to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in SCIAC while Cal Lutheran improved to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC.
Just before halftime with 1:05 on the clock and CMS down 6-3, CMS freshman K Matthew Aven hit a NCAA Division III-record tying 62-yard field goal to even the score at 6-6. The 62-yard field goal is a CMS record and it tied the Division III mark set by Dom Antonini of Rowan University in a game vs. Salisbury on Sept. 18, 1976. Aven is now 5-of-8 on field goals this season and has made kicks from 50, 53 and 62 yards.
The 50-yard field goal for Aven came on the previous CMS drive and narrowed Cal Lutheran's lead to 6-3 at the 5:17 mark of the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Cal Lutheran distanced itself from CMS with a pair of touchdowns. After a CMS punt on its first drive of the second half, Cal Lutheran took the ball and drove 65 yards on 14 plays to go ahead 12-6 at the 8:05 mark of the third quarter on a 3-yard run by David Rico on a fourth-and-goal attempt. CMS then blocked Cal Lu's extra point for the second time in the game.
Cal Lutheran added to its lead on its next possession with 25-yard touchdown run by Wayne Chapman to go ahead 20-6 with 19 seconds left in the third quarter after the two-point conversion.
On the game, CMS' defense held Cal Lu to 106 passing yards and 364 yards of total offense. Senior DB Joey Liekweg had a team-high 10 tackles for CMS.
The CMS offense was led by freshman QB Trey Reynolds who had 114 yards passing and 105 yards rushing including a 41-yard run.
Next up for CMS is a road game at Whittier on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.
