Pacific's Mills, Villareal-Gomez Selected For NWC Weekly Honors

More news about: Pacific

FOREST GROVE – The performances of safety Bryan Mills (Sr., Imbler, Ore.) and kicker Moses Villareal-Gomez (Jr., Stockton, Calif.) in Pacific's historic victory over Puget Sound on Saturday have earned the two selection as the Northwest Conference's Football Student-Athletes of the Week.   The awards, as selected by the league's sports information directors, was announced Monday night.

Mills was selected as the NWC Football Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week for his role in the 56-14 over the Loggers, which allowed the Boxers their first 5-0 start in school history.  Mills had four solo tackles in the contest and two of the Boxers' five interceptions.

Mills' first pick came in the first quarter and came on the heels of a Brandon Harms' (Jr., Canby, Ore.) 23-yard interception return for a touchdown.  The Pacific offense proceeded to return the pick for a touchdown to give the Boxers a 21-0 lead.  Mills had his second interception in the second quarter, which also set up an eventual touchdown that gave the Boxers a 28-0 lead.

"Bryan has continued to grow as a football player and a leader on our team," said Pacific Head Coach Keith Buckley.  "I am proud of his development and look forward to a great second half of the season from him."

Villareal-Gomez was named the NWC Football Special Teams Student-Athlete of the Week after tying his own Pacific single game record of eight point-after attempts made in the victory.  He tied the mark he set against the Loggers the year before.  The eight conversions allowed Villareal-Gomez to run his Pacific career record to 69 points-after made.

"Moses continues to be an integral part of our team's success," Buckley said.  "His eight PATs put points on the board, but his contribution to our kickoff team has been a big help to our defense all year long."

Both players have turned in performances that rank among the nation's statistical leaders at the NCAA Division III level.  Mills is ranked sixth nationally in interceptions, averaging 0.8 picks per game.  Villareal-Gomez, meanwhile, ranks 53rd with 0.8 field goals made per game and 86th with a .667 field goal percentage.

Pacific enters the week with a 5-0 record and a 2-0 record in NWC games.  The Boxers face their toughest test of the season this far on Saturday, traveling to Puyallup, Wash., to face No. 17/20 ranked Pacific Lutheran.  Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m.
