Privateers Repeat with Three of Four Weekly ECFC Awards

More news about: SUNY-Maritime

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (October 7, 2013) – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference announced its weekly awards for the 5th Week of the college football season on Monday. For the second week in a row, Maritime was recognized as winners of three of the four awards announced by the conference.

Maritime's trophy case is filling up in the early season, as the team has now piled up three Special Teams and Rookie of the Week awards, as wells as a pair of Offensive Player of the Week mentions through the first five weeks of the football season.

For the second week in a row, Maritime had the league's top offensive player as junior fullback Kyle Gardner (Amityville N.Y./St. Anthony's ) picked up Offensive Player of the Week recognition for his career-game during Saturday afternoon's win over Anna Maria by the score of 35-24. Sophomore kicker Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) earned his second straight Special Teams Player of the Week award and third straight overall honors for the team. For the second time this season, sophomore defensive back Francis Gannon (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) earned the league's top rookie award for his solid all-around game on Saturday.

Gardner had a career-high of 221 yards on the ground on 21 carries to average 10.5 yards per touch. The fullback's game got off to a slow start with just under 60 yards in the first half on eight carries, but the junior exploded in the second half with 164 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Gardner scored his first touchdown of the season in the third quarter on a 39-yard run up the middle of the field, and scored his second touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run to cap off the Privateer scoring.

Dietrich picks up special teams honors for the second consecutive week after going a perfect 5-for-5 on extra point chances, one shy of his career high set back during his first season with the team in 2012. In addition to his putting five points on the board for Maritime, Dietrich also averaged 57.5 yards per kick on his season-high six kickoffs

Gannon, who picked up the league's top-rookie award for the second week of his season, nets his second award with a solid game against Anna Maria on the defensive side of the ball for Maritime. Gannon made his ECFC debut on Saturday against Anna Maria with six tackles a forced fumble and an interception. On Anna Maria's second drive of the fourth quarter, Gannon took the ball away on an interception with 6:45 to go in regulation. Gannon also had a hand on special teams as Anna Maria attempted an onside kick in the closing minutes of the game, but Gannon was the first to touch and recover the ball for Maritime to virtually seal the victory for the Privateers.

The Privateers (1-3, 1-0 ECFC) will continue league play on the road this Saturday when they travel to Leicester, Mass. to take on Becker for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff against the Hawks.
