Maryville College's defense held Averett University to 82 total offensive yards while the Scots' offense racked up 547 total yards to claim a 48-0 shutout over the Cougars on MC's Honaker Field Saturday afternoon.
Maryville's defensive shutout was the teams first since defeating Methodist 38-0 in 2008.
Dylan Wolfenbarger paced the Scots with five solo tackles while Jamie Owen continued his quest to become the program's sack leader with six total tackles, including three sacks for 19 yards and four quarterback hurries. The Scots collectively recorded 15 tackles for a loss on the day.
MC's defensive efforts were equaled by their offense. A 14 play, 79 yard drive to begin the game put Maryville up 7-0 as Trenton Shuler finished off their opening drive with a two-yard score.
As the second quarter began, Maryville took advantage of great field possession and marched down the field for a four play, 57 yard scoring drive. Evan Pitenger found the end zone with a 36 yard scoring scramble. Lucas Underwood's second kick made the score 14-0.
On Averett's next possession, defensive back Zack Brown stepped in front of a Cinco Simmons pass and returned it 32 yards for a defensive score. Underwood's kick made the score 21-0 with 8:44 remaining before the half.
Following another key defensive stop, Ed Johnson ran back a punt 20 yards to midfield. The Scots used a 28 yard pass from Pittenger to Blake Williams and strong running by Trenton Shuler to get in scoring range. Evan Pittenger called his own number for a seven yard dash into the end zone to put MC up 28-0 at the half.
Maryville wasted little time after the intermission. On their first possession large runs by Travis Felder, Trenton Shuler, and Pittenger complimented a 13 yard scoring strike by Pittenger to Ed Johnson. As Underwood's kick sailed wide-right, the score stood at 34-0.
The Scots final scoring drive in the third quarter resulted in the strong running of Chad Brooks and Deshijon Whitlock. The seven play, 57 yard scoring drive featured 31 yards by Brooks and 22 yards by Whitlock including an eight yard scoring dash. Underwood's kick made the score 41-0.
MC's final scoring drive features freshman running back Trenton Shuler. Shuler ran five times to eclipse the 100 yard mark for the day scoring on a six yard trip to pay dirt. The score capped an eight play, 75 yard drive.
Averett (1-4, 0-2 USA South) was led in rushing by Xavier Morgan's 18 yards on eight carries. Cinco Simmons passed for 60 yards while going 9-for-23 via the air. Stefan Varner and Joshua Walker led the Cougars on defense with eight total stops each. Walker hauled in an interception as well.

Quarterback Evan Pittenger was 9-for-17 in the air for 126 yards. His favorite target was Ed Johnson who hauled in five passes for 72 yards and a TD.
The 48 points scored were the most points scored by a Scots team since 2006 when MC defeated Shenandoah 51-16. The win was the largest margin of victory since 1978 when MC defeated St. Leo 56-0. The defensive shutout was the 171st in the program's 120 seasons of collegiate football.
