Backup QBs lead Tommie victory

More news about: St. Thomas

Six different Tommies scored touchdowns and host St. Thomas set a school record with 697 yards of total offense in Saturday's MIAC football win at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.

UST coach Glenn Caruso (60-9), whose team was coming off a 20-18 loss to St. John's on Sept. 21 and a bye the previous Saturday, improved to 6-0 in Homecoming games and won his 60th game in six seasons.

The No. 6-ranked Tommies (3-1 overall, 1-1 MIAC) rolled up a 354-29 edge in rushing yards over the Knights (2-2, 1-2). The Toms rolled up 34 first downs. They converted 9-of-12 on third down, while limiting Carleton to 2-of-12.

UST had just one turnover and never punted as it split time between two sophomore quarterbacks in place of junior starter Matt O'Connell, who is recovering from an illness.

Sophomore RBs Brenton Braddock and Jack Kaiser and freshman RB Nick Waldvogel each scored two touchdowns. Eleven different Toms caught passes. UST had 354 rushing yards and 343 passing yards.

Sophomore QB John Gould of St. Thomas Academy, in his first college start, rushed four times for 95 yards and completed 9-of-12 passes for 127 yards with one intercepted. His 66-yard scamper set up the Tommies' first score. Sophomore QB Alex Fenske of Marshall took his first varsity snaps and played equal stretches with Gould. Fenske completed 13-of-17 passes for 208 yards and no turnovers.

Braddock rushed 12 times for 89 yards, including a 59-yard scoring run in the second quarter. Waldvogel had 96 yards of rushing and receiving yards on 16 touches.

Sophomore Jordan Young had a partial block of a punt, and the Tommie defense received interceptions from Tremayne Williams, Sean Hamlin and freshman Bennett Celichowski to go with six tackles for loss as a unit.

Carleton standout WR Chase Gottschalk left early in the game with an injury and didn't return. The Knights' Mason Schnarr had a first-quarter interception, a break-up and seven tackles. Daniel Cook had three tackles for loss and eight solos.
