Johns Hopkins' Connery Named Centennial Defensive Player of the Week

LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins junior defensive end Matthew Connery(Norman, OK/Norman) has been named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in Saturday's 24-7 victory over Susquehanna. This is the first time in Connery's career that he has been honored as the CC Defensive Player of the Week.

Connery totaled 10 tackles, three tackles for losses and two sacks to fuel a suffocating defensive showing for the Blue Jays. His 10 tackles and two sacks are both career highs and his three tackles for losses match his career high.

With Connery leading the way, the Johns Hopkins defense limited Susquehanna to 122 yards of total offense, including just 32 on the ground, registered nine sacks and held the Crusaders to a 3-for-16 showing on third down conversions. Susquehanna registered 62 yards on its lone scoring drive of the game, but just 60 combined yards on its other 12 possessions combined.

With his effort against Susquehanna, Connery now has career totals of 55 tackles, 16.0 tackles for losses and 8.0 sacks. He led the team with 11.5 tackles for losses last season.

Johns Hopkins (2-0, 1-0 Centennial) is currently ranked 16th in the nation by D3football.com and will next be in action on Saturday, September 21 when the Blue Jays travel o Moravian for a Centennial Conference game against the Greyhounds.
