#4 Mary Hardin-Baylor Uses Second Half Surge to Top Kean

More news about: Kean

Union, N.J. (9/14/13) – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor used a third quarter surge to push past Kean University by the final of 34-7, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

Senior runningback Elijah Hudson followed up his 184 yard performance last week with a 154 yard game today to help propel #4 UMHB to their 36th consecutive regular season win, dating back to October of 2009.

The two teams have met just twice in their history and coincidentally the Cru were victorious in last year's meeting by the same score.

Both teams competed to an offensive stalemate in the first 30 minutes of action as Mary Hardin-Baylor was only able to scratch across three points before the break.  Those three points came during their first possession of the contest.  After two quick first downs thanks to a 13 yard reception from Kamray Runnels and a 14 yard pickup from Hudson as well as a Cougar penalty, the Cru seemed to be pushing their way to the redzone.  But a sack from senior Bob Klecha (his first of two on the afternoon), helped halt the touchdown threat and forced the Crusaders into a field goal option.  Freshman Drew Owen put UMHB on the board with a 41 yarder.

That would be it in the first half as defense was the game with a combined three fumbles and two interceptions rounding out the first 30 minutes.

Mary Hardin-Baylor then took over in the second half, picking up 21 third quarter points to push ahead.  After receiving the opening kickoff, the Cru used marched 75 yards on 11 plays, capping off their first touchdown of the day with a four yard rush from backup quarterback Zach Anderson.  Anderson, who entered in the second quarter, used two strikes of 19 and 18 yards respectively, to push into the redzone.

On the Cougars (0-2) next possession, it was senior Brodrick Cain who intercepted a pass early in the Kean drive to give UMHB the ball back at the Kean 20 yard line.  Anderson used one play, a pass to Hudson, to take a 17-0 advantage.

But the Cougars went down fighting as rookie Damian Corredor took the ensuing kickoff the length of the field for what would be Kean's only score of the afternoon.  Corredor's 100 yard return is good for second all-time in the Kean single-game record book.

The Crusaders put the game out of reach on their next drive as Runnels topped off an eight play, 65 yard drive with a four yard catch to go ahead, 24-7.

Anderson finished with a 12-for-14 afternoon after entering in the second quarter.  He registered three touchdowns and 161 passing yards.  For the Cougars, senior quarterback Christian Bailoni was 11-for-22 with 82 yards and two interceptions.  The Cru defensive unit was able to record six sacks on the afternoon, as junior Deshon Kinsey led the way to 10 total tackles, one and a half sacks and one forced fumble.

Kean was led by Klecha who tallied seven solo stops, including three tackles for a loss and two sacks.  Senior Tyler Jones added 10 total tackles and one fumble recovery.

The Cougars travel to Endicott College for their last non-conference opponent of the season on Saturday, September 21st with a 1 p.m. kickoff.
