Bethany and Geneva to Open 2013 PAC Football Season Saturday

GREENVILLE, Pa. (pacathletics.org) – Anticipating another terrific season of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) football, the PAC will kick off the 59th year of conference football action on Saturday, September 14 with its PAC Kickoff 2013 celebration. This year's conference opener features Bethany College traveling to Reeves Field in Beaver Falls, Pa. to take on Geneva College.

The start time for Saturday's matchup is slated for 8 p.m. Geneva will be hosting its fifth-annual Community Night for members of the Beaver County community, and as a token of appreciation for the support that continues to be shown towards Geneva, there will be no admission charge for Saturday's game.

"We are honored to be hosting the 2013 PAC football opener. Combining the first conference game with our community celebration is a perfect way for us to kick off the new season. We take great pride in this valley and this community and are once again very excited to have the opportunity to showcase one of the most exciting football atmospheres in the region," said Geneva's Director of Athletics, Van Zanic.

Joining PAC Commissioner Joe Onderko on the field prior to kickoff for a ceremonial coin toss will be Geneva's President, Kenneth A. Smith, Ph.D., and Zanic, along with Bethany's President, Dr. Scott D. Miller, and Director of Athletics, Brian Rose.

Also participating in the ceremonial coin toss as Geneva's "Honorary Coach" will be Dr. Brad Frey, a professor of sociology at Geneva and chair of the school's department of history, political science and sociology.

"As one of the longest-tenured conference members, we are excited to be a part of the PAC Kickoff celebration," said Rose. "Even though Geneva is one of the newest members of the PAC, the Bethany-Geneva series dates back over 100 years and the games have been very competitive recently. We expect another hard-fought game on the field and a great atmosphere at Geneva to truly celebrate what the PAC and its member schools represent."

Onderko foresees the yearly conference opener serving as a springboard to the conference season, and looks forward to the kickoff game becoming an annual marquee event among the league's membership.

"The start of the conference football season is always a time filled with hope and optimism for all teams. I can't think of a better setting to kick off PAC play than before a huge crowd under the lights at Reeves Field in Beaver Falls, featuring two teams that played one of the most exciting games of the 2012 season. The PAC is hopeful that the conference can continue to spotlight a single game in future years and set the tone for the upcoming league schedule," said Onderko.

Bethany posted a 42-36 overtime victory over Geneva in its Homecoming game a year ago. Down 36-29, the Golden Tornadoes sent the game into overtime on quarterback Zack Heyward's (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) 41-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass to Rocco Colavecchia (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) with no time remaining in regulation. On its opening overtime possession, Bethany quarterback Matt Grimard's (Lowell, Mass./Dracut) connected on a 24-yard touchdown toss to wide receiver Ed Holmes, which proved to be the game-winning score.
