2 former Statesmen join gridiron coaching staff

More news about: Hobart

Hobart College Head Football Coach Mike Cragg recently announced that Art Garvey and Andrew Klindera will join his coaching staff for the 2013 season. Both men served as team captains last season, leading the Statesmen to the Liberty League Championship and the program's first appearance in the NCAA Championship Quarterfinals.

"Our success last season was due in no small part to the leadership we got from our seniors, and Art and Andrew were two of the best at making sure our team did things the right way," Cragg said. "I'm glad to have them back for a fifth season."

A 2012 D3football.com third team All-American, Garvey was the cornerstone of one of the nation's top offensive lines. The starting left guard led the Statesmen to No. 10 in the nation in sacks allowed (0.62/g), No. 26 in rushing offense (237.15 yds/g), No. 30 in scoring (36.08 ppg), and No. 49 in total offense (414.31 yds/g).

A three-year starter, Garvey twice earned All-Liberty League honors, including first team recognition last season. He earned a bachelor's degree in environmental studies.

A 2012 All-Liberty League second team selection, Klindera was a three-year starter at inside linebacker. He registered a league-high 108 tackles as a senior, including a career-high 12 stops in his final collegiate game at No. 3 St. Thomas.

In 37 career games, Klindera recorded 201 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, six pass breakups, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and a sack. He withdrew from school during the 2013 spring semester to play professional football in Furstenfeldbruck, Germany, for the Fursty Razorbacks.

Klindera will take two classes this semester to complete his bachelor's degree in political science.

Hobart went 12-1 last season, the most wins in a season for the Statesmen. The 12 consecutive wins to start the campaign are also a Hobart single season record. The Statesmen captured their second consecutive, and eighth overall, Liberty League Championship with an unblemished 7-0 record. During their four seasons on campus, Garvey and Klindera led Hobart to a 30-10 record and two NCAA playoff appearances.

The Statesmen will open the 2013 season at Dickinson on Saturday, Sept. 7. Kickoff in Carlisle, Pa., is scheduled for noon.
