LOS ANGELES — Greg Holsworth, a three-time All-SCIAC linebacker for the Tigers from 2008-11, returned to Occidental for camp this week. But on Saturdays this fall he'll be on the sideline, wearing a headset and helping to coordinate Oxy's defense as the linebackers coach, instead of the team's defensive captain.
Holsworth was a member of the famous 2008 Oxy squad that went undefeated in the regular season and finished the season ranked in the top 15 of the Division III national poll. In 2011, he was the team captain and most valuable player. He even filled in as the starting tight end when injuries depleted the position.
"Even though I'm not on the field on Saturdays anymore, my goals for this team haven't changed from when I was a player," Holsworth said. "We are still trying to win the conference and still trying to make the playoffs. I'm just trying to help make that happen from the sideline now, not the field."
Greg, who graduated from Oxy in May of 2012 with a degree in Kinesiology, will also serve as the Tigers strength and conditioning coordinator.
Holsworth grew up in Arlington, Wash. where he attended Arlington HS, competing in football, baseball, and wrestling.
"I'm glad to be back," Holsworth said. "Some of the faces are different, but the mentality of the program is exciting right now. It's a great thing to be a part of."
