Longtime assistant coach Jason Mangone has taken over as head coach of The College at Brockport football program.

Mangone takes over for Rocco Salomone, the winningest coach in Brockport football history. Salomone has been named an assistant athletic director.

Mangone, who joined the football coaching staff in 1998, steered the Golden Eagles offense to record production during the 2012 season. The Brockport passing attack, in particular, has thrived under Mangone's guidance. Quarterback Joe Scibilia, who graduated in May, became the Golden Eagles all-time leader in career, season and single-game passing yards and total offense last season.

"Brockport football possesses all of the key ingredients necessary to achieve great success," Mangone said. "We are entering a new phase of Golden Eagles football as we look forward to the exciting renovations that are taking place in Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium and our 2014 debut in the Empire 8. I'm honored to continue my coaching career at my alma mater."

Brockport athletic director Erick Hart believes Mangone will have a tremendous impact on the program.

"The success Jason has experienced as offensive coordinator speaks for itself," Hart said. "He's a great recruiter and our student-athletes play hard for him. The future of Brockport football is bright."

Mangone began his undergraduate career at Alfred before transferring to Brockport in 1997. He started at quarterback for the Golden Eagles during the 1997 and 1998 seasons and set single-season records for completion percentage and efficiency rating. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in physical education in 2000 and earned a master's degree in athletic administration from Brockport in 2012.

Salomone amassed a career record of 103-80-1 since taking over as head coach in 1994. He first joined the program in 1990.

"I'm excited about this new challenge," Salomone said. "This move presents me with an opportunity to be involved in the department of athletics as a whole and I'm looking forward to this new phase of my career."

Salomone is a two-time Brockport alumnus, having graduated in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in physical education and he earned a master's degree in education. Salomone led the Golden Eagles to its first NCAA playoff berth in 2000. That team led all NCAA divisions in scoring defense, allowing just 44 points and five touchdowns throughout the entire season.

"I'm looking forward to utilizing Rocco's experience and expertise in a new capacity within the department of athletics," Hart said. "His talents will be invaluable as we continue to build upon the proud tradition of Golden Eagles athletics."

"Rocco has been an invaluable coach, mentor, and friend since the day I joined the Brockport football program and I can't thank him enough for all he's done for me," Mangone says. "My experience playing for Rocco made me want to pursue a career in coaching. And I'm still here today because of him."
