The Game: 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins (10-1) makes the 327-mile trip from Baltimore to Alliance, Ohio to take on top-ranked Mount Union (11-0) in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Football playoffs.

The Teams: Johns Hopkins moved into the second round of the NCAAs with a 42-10 victory over Washington & Jefferson at Homewood Field in the first round last Saturday. Mount Union eased past visiting Christopher Newport, 72-14, in the first round at home last Saturday.

What's at Stake: A trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals awaits the winner of this week's Johns Hopkins-Mount Union game. The JHU-MU winner will take on the winner of the Widener-Salisbury game in the quarterfinals on Saturday, December 1.

Series History: This will be the first-ever meeting between Johns Hopkins and Mount Union in football. The teams shared no common opponents this season.

JHU Against the OAC: In additon to this being the first meeting for the Blue Jays against the Purple Raiders, this will also be the first time Johns Hopkins plays against a team from the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Against Teams From Ohio: This week's game at Mount Union will be just the third all-time for JHU against a team from the state of Ohio. Johns Hopkins had a two-year series against Oberlin in 1963 and 1964 - the Blue Jays dropped both of those games.

NCAA History: Johns Hopkins is making its fourth trip to the NCAA Playoffs with all four appearances coming since 2005 under the direction of Jim Margraff, the all-time winningest coach in school history. Including last week's 42-10 win over Washington & Jefferson, the Blue Jays are 3-3 all-time in the NCAAs with a run to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2009 highlighting JHU's NCAA history.
Last week's win over Washington & Jefferson was JHU's first-ever home NCAA Playoff victory and just the second home NCAA game in school history.

Post-Season Regulars: JHU's appearance in the NCAAs this season is the fourth in school history and also the ninth time Johns Hopkins has advanced to the post-season as JHU has also played in five ECAC Bowl Games since 2002. Including the 3-3 record in NCAA action, JHU sports a 7-4 all-time post-season record as the Blue Jays are 4-1 all-time in ECAC Bowl Games.

Seniors Break Record: The current seniors on the Johns Hopkins football team set a school record for most wins by one class in school history with the 49-7 win over McDaniel in the regular season finale. Including last week's win over W&J, this year's seniors are 38-8 since arriving at JHU - this breaks the record of 36 wins set in 2005 and matched in 2011.
In addition, the current seniors rank as the second-winningest class in Centennial Conference history. Only the 2000 seniors at McDaniel, who compiled a 41-5 record during their career, have won more games than JHU's current seniors.

JHU Ties Victory Record: With the win last week vs. Washington & Jefferson, Johns Hopkins has tied the school record for victories in a season with 10. This is the fourth time JHU has won 10 games in season, including the thrid time in the last four years (2009, 2011). JHU originally set a school record with 10 wins in 2003. Johns Hopkins had never won more than seven games in a season prior to 2002, but the Blue Jays have posted eight or more wins nine times in the last 11 years.

Poll Position: Johns Hopkins ended the regular season ranked 15th in the AFCA Division III Coaches Poll and 19th in the D3football.com Poll. The Blue Jays were also tied for sixth in the final regular season Lambert Meadowlands Poll.
Johns Hopkins has been ranked in the top 25 of the AFCA Poll for 19 consecutive weeks dating back to the first poll of the 2011 season. Johns Hopkins is one of just nine teams in the nation that has been ranked in the AFCA's top 25 every week since the start of the 2011 season.
The Johns Hopkins office of Athletic Communications uses the AFCA Poll to reflect JHU's official ranking at the time of a game. The AFCA, D3football.com and Lambert Meadowlands Polls can be found on page 6.

Johns Hopkins, Stanford Stand Alone: There are exactly two schools in the nation that currently rank among the top 15 in the nation among the U.S. News & World Report Rankings of Top National Universities and among the top 15 in their respective college football rankings: Johns Hopkins and Stanford. JHU is ranked 13th by U.S. News and World Report among National Universities and 15th by the AFCA.
Stanford checks in at number six in the U.S. News rankings of top National Universities and the Cardinal are eighth in this week's AP Poll.

Margraff Ranks Second on State Victory Chart: Johns Hopkins head coach Jim Margraff sports a career record of 157-80-3 (.660) entering this week's game at Mount Union. He is just the second college football coach in Maryland state history to win 150 career games. Only Morgan State's Eddie Hurt, who won 174 games from 1929-59, has won more games as the head football coach at a college or university in the state of Maryland than Margraff.

Centennial Conference Champions: Johns Hopkins claimed its eighth Centennial Conference title this season and all eight championships have come since 2002. JHU is tied for second in league history with its eight titles. Only Dickinson (9) and Muhlenberg (8) have as many or more titles than the Blue Jays.

JHU vs. #1: This week's game against Mount Union will be the first for the Johns Hopkins football program against a team ranked number one in the nation. Johns Hopkins has twice played teams ranked third; the Blue Jays dropped a 50-27 decision to then third-ranked and eventual national finalist Bridgewater in 2001 and dropped a 12-0 decision to third-ranked Wesley in the 2009 NCAA Quarterfinals.

JHU vs. Top 10: Johns Hopkins will be playing its seventh all-time game against a team ranked in the top 10. The Blue Jays are 2-4 in the previous six games vs. top 10 teams and each of the last four have been decided by 12 points or less. JHU's two top-10 wins have both come on the road.

All-Centennial: Johns Hopkins placed 12 players on the 2012 All-Centennial Conference Football Team, which was announced on November 13. In addition, Johns Hopkins produced the Offensive Player of the Year (Jonathan Rigaud), Defensive Player of the Year (Taylor Maciow) and Coach of the Year (Jim Margraff). Below is a look at JHU's All-Centennial selections:

John Arena (SS-OLB) • Second Team
Vincenzo Bonaddio (OL/T) • Second Team
Ben Cranston (OL/C) • First Team
Joe DiTrolio (DL) • Second Team
Armand Jenifer (OL/T) • First Team
Michael Longo (DE) • Honorable Mention
Jonathan Rigaud (RB) • Off POY • First Team
Taylor Maciow (LB) • Def POY • First Team
Kevin Quinn (OL/G) • Second Team
Ryan Rice (CB) • Second Team
Adam Schweyer (SS-OLB) • First Team
Dan Wodicka (WR) • First Team

State of Affairs: Johns Hopkins has one of the most geographically diverse rosters in Division III Football. In fact, Johns Hopkins is one of just nine teams in thenation with a roster represented by 20 or more states. The top five states represented on the 2012 Johns Hopkins football roster:

Pennsylvania - 23
New Jersey - 15
Florida - 11
California - 8
Maryland - 6

November Reign: Johns Hopkins is 11-2 in its last 13 games played in the month of November.

Best-Ever 25-Game Run: Dating back to late in the 2010 season, Johns Hopkins is 23-2 in its last 25 games. This is the best 25-game run in school history. JHU had posted a 22-3 record over a 25-game span twice previously.

Quick Starts: The Blue Jays have outscored the opposition 220-51 in the first and second quarters combined through 11 games with an 98-20 mark in the first quarter and a 122-31 bulge in the second.

That's a Record: Johns Hopkins tied an NCAA Division III record and set school and Centennial Conference records with 40 first downs in the win over Moravian on September 15. This is the third time in Division III history that a team has accumulated 40 first downs in a game.

That's a First: Johns Hopkins scored at least 33 points in each of its first eight games this season before being held to 12 at Franklin & Marshall in week nine. This was the first time in school history that JHU scored 33+ in eight straight games. The Blue Jays rank first in the Centennial Conference and 19th in the nation in scoring offense (38.9).

On Par: Johns Hopkins averaged a school-record 492.7 yards per game last season and is running ahead of that pace this season at 504.1 yards per game.
The Blue Jays currently rank first in the Centennial Conference and 10th nationally in total offense (504.1). JHU has topped the 500-yard mark six times in 11 games and only once, at Susquehanna (389), have the Blue Jays been held under 400 yards.

Balancing Act: Johns Hopkins is one of the most balanced teams in the nation as the Blue Jays are currently averaging 264.4 rushing yards and 239.7 passing yards per game. JHU is currently one of just four Division III teams in the nation averaging better than 260 yards rushing and 235 yards passing per game. Not surprisingly, all four of these teams are still alive in the playoffs and two - Johns Hopkins and Mount Union - will meet this week.

It's Been a While - Part I: JHU rushed for 338 yards and passed for 244 in the win earlier this season vs. Moravian and finished the regular season with a 309-yard rushing, 215-yard passing effort against McDaniel. These efforts mark just the third and fourth times in school history that JHU has totaled more than 300 yards rushing and 200 yards passing in the same game. The two previous instances took place more than 40 years ago.

It's Been a While - Part II: For just the third time in school history, Johns Hopkins passed for more than 300 yards (326) while rushing for more than 200 (207) as the Blue Jays rolled up 533 yards of total offense in the 49-0 win at Dickinson on October 13. It took just over a month to turn the trick again as JHU totaled 282 yards rushing and 313 passing vs. Washington & Jefferson in the first round of the NCAAs. All four 300-yard passing, 200-yard rushing games have taken place under the direction of head coach Jim Margraff and three of the four have occured in the last 26 games.

Another First: Last week's 282-yard rushing, 313-yard passing effort against Washington & Jefferson marked the first time in school history that Johns Hopkins has rushed for more than 275 yards and passed for more than 300 yards in one game.

JHU Punches up 595 Yards vs. Washington & Jefferson: The Johns Hopkins offense was clicking in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs as the Blue Jays rolled up a season-high 595 yards of total offense. The mark is the highest ever in a playoff game for the Blue Jays and the sixth-highest single-game total in school history.

Two Jays 2K: Johns Hopkins had a rare double in the win against Muhlenberg as senior running back Jonathan Rigaud topped 2,000 career rushing yards and junior wide receiver Dan Wodicka topped 2,000 career receiving yards in the 33-21 win against the Mules.

Double Your Pleasure: Jonathan Rigaud (210 rushing yards) and JD Abbott (107) both topped the 100-yard rushing mark vs. Gettysburg. They are the first Johns Hopkins tandem to turn the trick since Adam Cook (149) and Mark Nesbitt (103) against F&M on October 11, 2003. JHU is 16-0 all-time when it has two players top the 100-yard rushing mark in the same game.

Defense Continues Run: With all the talk about the Johns Hopkins offense, the Blue Jay defense continues to excel. Johns Hopkins currently ranks first in the Centennial Conference in total defense (275.1), rushing defense (93.2) and scoring defense (14.5) and second in passing defense (181.7). JHU ranks 16th in the nation in total defense, 19th in rushing defense and 14th in scoring defense. The Blue Jays also rank ninth in the nation in sacks per game (3.36).
Other notes of interest about the Johns Hopkins defense ...
• JHU posted its only shutout of the season with a 49-0 win at Dickinson and seven of 11 opponents have been held to 14 points or less.
• The opposition is averaging just 2.7 yards per rushing attempt and 4.0 yards per play.
• JHU has surrendered exactly six offensive touchdowns in the first half this season.
• JHU has accumulated 37 sacks in 11 games. Fourteen different players have been in on at least one sack.

Youth Shall Be Served: While seniors Adam Schweyer and Taylor Maciow rank as the team's top two tacklers, the defense as a whole is one of the youngest in the Centennial Conference. In fact, there is only one senior among JHU's eight-man rotation on the defensive line and just one senior among JHU's top six defensive backs. In fact, three of the top six players in the secondary are freshmen and three of the four starters on the defensive line are sophomores.
Consider also that of the 23 players with 10 or more tackles on the year, only five are seniors; six are juniors, seven are sophomores and five are freshmen.

Sustained Success: Since the start of the 2002 season the Blue Jays sport an 91-30 (.752) record. Taking it back farther the Blue Jays are 97-33 (.746) since the start of the 2001 season and 102-38 (.729) since the beginning of the 2000 season. The 74 wins the Blue Jays amassed from 2000-09 are the most wins in a decade in school history. Johns Hopkins had never won more than seven games in a season prior to this decade. In the decade completed in 2009, the Blue Jays averaged more than seven wins per season (7.4).

Seven's Heaven: Since the beginning of the 2003 season the Blue Jays are 82-21 (.796) when scoring more than seven points and 0-7 when they have been held to seven points or less.

Streaks Snapped: Johns Hopkins had several impressive winning streaks snapped with the 14-12 loss at Franklin & Marshall on Nov. 3. Among them ...
• A 22-game regular season winning streak that dated to a 26-17 loss to Ursinus (10-16-2010). The 22-game run is the longest in school history and the second-longest in Centennial history.
• A 20-game Centennial Conference winning streak that dated to the same 26-17 loss to Ursinus (10-16-2010). The 20-game run is the longest in school history and the second-longest in Centennial history.
• An 11-game road winning streak that also dated to that game at Ursinus (10-16-2010). The 11-game run is the longest in school history.
• A 10-game regular season winning streak in the month of November that dated to a 19-11 loss to Franklin & Marshall (11-3-2007).
