More news about: Benedictine

LISLE, Ill. - Riding a heavy dose of senior running back John Borsellino on offense and senior defensive lineman Ben Lockton on defense, the Benedictine University football team closed out the home portion of the schedule with a 34-6 win over Maranatha on Saturday afternoon.

Borsellino carried the ball 33 times for 220 yards as Benedictine amassed 254 yards on the ground in the win. Lockton recorded 12 tackles to lead the defense including 3.5 for loss while also recording three turnovers. Following a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles raced to a 20-0 lead in the second. Borsellino scored from four yards out to cap a 10-play, 71-yard drive on the opening play of the second quarter.

Following a three and out by the defense, Benedictine marched 68 yards, striking when Cyle Schultz connected with Artie Monaco for a 17-yard score. A quick turnover allowed strong field position when Lockton recovered a fumble. Borsellino's second score of the day extended the margin to 2-0 with a one-yard plunge at the 6:56 mark of the second. Borsellino gained 151 yards in the first half.

Maranatha scored late in the first half, but Benedictine opened the second half with a 45-yard drive to jump ahead 27-6 when Schultz hit Colin Kanehl for a 35-yard score. Schultz threw two touchdowns and completed nine passes on 14 attempts for 129 yards.

The final score of the game came in the fourth quarter when an interception by Lockton again established a short field. Monaco danced in from 12 yards out to account for the final tally.

Chris Buonavolanto and Mike Theriault also logged double digit tackles to lead the defense, which finished with a +2 turnover margin and allowed just 221 total yards.

Benedictine (4-5, 2-4) closes the season next week with a 12:00 p.m. affair on the road at Lakeland.
