More news about: Guilford

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Sophomore Nash Nance passed for 309 yards and five touchdowns in Hampden-Sydney College's 68-24 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over visiting Guilford College Saturday.

The Tigers' fourth straight win sets up a Nov. 3 showdown with Washington and Lee University, a 41-14 winner over Catholic University of America Saturday. The teams share first place in the ODAC with 4-1 league records and play next Saturday in Lexington, Va. The Quakers' first loss in three games bounced them out of a tie for first place in the league.

Hampden-Sydney (6-2, 4-1 ODAC) scored on 10-of-11 possessions, including its first nine. Nance threw touchdowns of 10 and 38 yards to Holton Walker on back-to-back first-quarter drives, which opened a 25-0 Tigers' lead.

Guilford (4-4, 3-2 ODAC) picked up its initial first down late in the first quarter and got on the scoreboard on Tyler Hunt's career-long 39-yard field goal to start the second quarter. Nance threw his fourth touchdown of the half and Evan King scored on a two-yard touchdown to give the hosts a 40-10 halftime lead.

The Quakers started the second half with a nine-play, 75-yard scoring drive capped by rookie quarterback Matt Pawlowski's second touchdown run of the game, a one-yard sneak. The Tigers' answered on the ensuing possession with Nance's six-yard shovel pass to King for a score, followed by another two-yard scoring run by King, which made it 54-17 after three quarters.

Nance, a transfer from the University of Tennessee, matched his personal best with five touchdown passes. He completed 22-of-35 passes without an interception before giving way in the third quarter to rookie Kyle Farlow. Walker finished with 10 grabs for 170 yards and two touchdowns, all game highs. King gained 95 rushing yards on 21 carries and caught six passes for 52 yard and a touchdown. Reserve Brady Macko carried 10 times for a game-best 103 rushing yards, 65 of which came on a fourth-quarter touchdown run.

Guilford's Pawlowski completed 22-of-36 passes for 242 yards, but no touchdowns for the first time in his eight-game career. He also ran for two touchdowns, a personal best. Classmate Adam Smith made seven catches for 108 yards and Mike Williams led the Quakers' rushers with 41 yards on seven carries. Sophomore Satiir Stevenson made a game-high 13 tackles on defense.

Guilford closes its home schedule next Saturday (11/3) versus Catholic on Senior Day at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
