Guilford Wins at Shenandoah, 20-7

More news about: Guilford

WINCHESTER, Va. – Matt Pawlowski threw two touchdowns to Trey Billian in Guilford College's 20-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football win at Shenandoah University Saturday. Tyler Hunt added two field goals as the Quakers (2-3, 1-1 ODAC) won the first football game between the two schools.

Guilford's defense limited the Hornets (1-4, 0-2 ODAC) to 216 total offensive yards and registered a season-high five sacks. The Quakers snuffed out a fake field-goal attempt from inside their own 10-yard line on the game's first possession and Satiir Stevenson picked off a Corey Taylor pass on Guilford's 10-yard line to end another Shenandoah threat.

The Hornets made three trips inside Guilford's 20-yard line in the first half, but the Quakers held a 10-0 halftime lead. The Quakers got on the board first on Hunt's first field goal, a 30-yard kick, midway through the second quarter. Pawlowski engineered a successful two-minute drive later in the quarter and capped a six-play, 70-yard drive with a 13-yard strike to Billian 35 seconds before halftime.

Hunt's second field goal, a career-long 33-yarder, boosted the Quakers' edge to 13-0 midway through the third quarter.

On the first play of Guilford's initial fourth-quarter drive, Pawlowski connected with Billian on a 79-yard scoring play, the Quakers' longest completion in at least 15 years. Hunt's point after opened a 20-0 Guilford lead with 11:32 remaining.

Taylor's nine-yard touchdown pass to Rico Salguero got the Hornets on the board with five minutes to play, but Shenandoah did not score the rest of the way.

Pawlowski completed 15-of-28 passes for 223 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Billian's lone receptions were both touchdowns and totaled a game-high 92 yards. Adam Smith grabbed four passes and Mike Williams led Guilford's ground gainers with 59 rushing yards on 16 carries.

Defensively, Robert Smith shared game-high honors with 13 tackles, his sixth straight game with 10 or more stops. Reggie Bullard made eight stops, including two sacks. Tyler Eller also had two sacks among his five tackles in the game.

Shenandoah's Taylor completed 11-of-24 passes for 124 yards. Andrew Smith led the Hornets with 41 rushing yards on six carries and Qiydaar Murphy made four catches for 70 yards. Jajuan Johnson led the hosts with 13 tackles, including three sacks.

Guilford entertains league-rival Bridgewater College in a rare Thursday night game Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. on the Appenzeller Field at Armfield Athletic Center.
