Guilford Defeats Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Guilford College used a strong aerial performance Saturday afternoon to key a 20-7 ODAC football victory over Shenandoah University.

Guilford (2-3, 1-1 ODAC) threw for 223 yards and gained another 99 on the ground to help itself to a victory in the inital football matchup between the two schools.

Shenandoah (1-4, 0-2) was held to just 206 yards in offense on the day with 54 of those yards coming on the Hornets first play from scrimmage.

That play, a pass completion from Corey Taylor to Qiydaar Murphy, set up SU up with a 1st and goal at the Quakers 8.

Unfortunately for the homecoming day crowd of 1789, GC set Shenandoah back a total of three yards in the next three plays and a shovel pass on from field goal formation on fourth down came up short.

Guilford scored the initial points of the game on a Tyler Hunt 30-yard field goal at 7:31 of the second before quarterback Matt Pawlowski hit wideout Trey Billian with a 13-yard strike 35 seconds prior to halftime.

The TD hookup would be the first of two on the day for the duo - in the fourth, Pawlowski found Billian down the seam for a 79-yard score and a 20-0 lead.

The Hornets answered that score two possessions later by driving 62 yards in seven plays, ending with a 9-yard Taylor pass to freshman Rigo Salguero.

Taylor drifted back almost to the 25, avoid three defenders and finding Salguero wide open in the back of the end zone.

SU turned the ball over on downs on its next possession and by the time it got the ball back, there was just 87 seconds remained in the contest.

Pawlowski finished 15 of 28 for 223 yards and the two TDs for GC. The Shenandoah defense sacked him six times.

Taylor was 11 for 24 for 124 yards and the one TD against one interception for the hosts.

Murphy led all players with 70 yards receiving.

Defensively, Robert Smith had 13 tackles for Guilford and Jajuan Johnson 13 stops for the Hornets.

SU is at Catholic on Friday night in a 7:00 ODAC contest.
