CENTERVILLE, Mass. – Wesley College's Luke Maginnis has been named the Defensive Player of the Week by both the Eastern College Athletic Conference and Beyond Sports Network, the organizations announced on Tuesday afternoon. These are the first weekly awards that Maginnis has earned in his career.
A sophomore linebacker from Asbury, N.J., Maginnis picked off a pair of passes and made ten tackles in sixth-ranked Wesley's 25-22 win at #25 Louisiana College on Saturday night. The interceptions were the first of his career as a Wolverine and both came at crucial situations. His second interception of the game came with 1:07 remaining in the fourth quarter and he ran it back 23 yards to set up Wesley's game-winning field goal as time expired.
Through four games this season, Maginnis ranks third on the squad with 28 tackles and his two interceptions are second on the team. A member of Wesley's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Maginnis made just five tackles as a freshman in 2011.
No. 6 Wesley is idle this Saturday, but will play its fourth-straight ranked opponent when it hosts #13 Birmingham-Southern on Saturday, October 6, at 1 pm. If you cannot make the game, fans can follow the game live online at www.GoWesleyAthletics.com as Sean Greene calls the action on WDEL 1150 AM.
