GREENWOOD, Ind. – For the second time in four weeks, a member of the Defiance College special teams unit has been selected as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week, with Spencer Saunders claiming the honor on Monday.
Saunders played a major part in helping Defiance pick up a 30-7 Homecoming victory against Anderson on Saturday, September 22, as the sophomore place-kicker accounted for 12 points without missing an attempt.
The Springfield, Ohio, native scored the eventual game-winning points in the first quarter and matched a personal-best with a 33-yard field goal for a 10-0 Yellow Jacket lead. Saunders went on to connect from 28 and 22 yards out and converted all three point-after attempts in the contest.
Saunders now ranks third among all HCAC kickers with 15 points during the 2012 campaign and leads all conference performers with three made field goals.
The HCAC Player-of-the-Week award is the first for Saunders in his two-year career with the Purple and Gold and the second weekly honor earned by the DC football program this season.
Saunders and the Jackets (1-3, 1-1 HCAC) will look for a second-straight victory on Saturday, September 29, when they take the road to challenge Earlham at 2:00 pm.
