Streeter Gets 100th Centennial Conference Win as Bullets Down Ursinus

More news about: Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Senior tailback Ted Delia rushed for 121 yards and a career-high four touchdowns while Head Coach Barry Streeter earned his 100th career Centennial Conference (CC) victory as the Gettysburg College football team downed host Ursinus College 48-7 in its CC opener Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field.

Streeter becomes just the second coach in conference history to reach the milestone, joining current Johns Hopkins University coach Jim Margraff, who has captured 102 CC victories.

The Bullets (2-0, 1-0 CC), who outgained Ursinus 567-177, also received a big day from senior quarterback Kody Smith who led all rushers with 129 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. He also threw for 205 yards an additional TD on 15-of-27 passing, marking the first time a Bullet quarterback rushed for 100 yards and passed for 200 yards in the same game since Joe Gossweiler '05 rushed for 108 and passed for 216 in a 31-30 win over Waynesburg in 2003.

Senior receiver Kyle Davis hauled in five passes for 85 yards – both career-highs – and a touchdown for the Bullets, who posted their highest scoring output in a Centennial Conference opener since a 62-20 win over Western Maryland in 1989.

Senior linebacker Larry DelViscio led all players with 12 tackles for Gettysburg, which forced Ursinus (1-1, 0-1 CC) to punt on its first eight complete possessions. The Bullets out-rushed the Bears 362-17, marking the lowest rushing output by a Gettysburg opponent since Averett University also rushed for 17 yards in 2002. Gettysburg, which is 2-0 for the first time since 1993, has allowed a total of 53 rushing yards this season.

The Bullets also registered four sacks for the second game in a row, with senior defensive end Joe Ventresca leading the way with one and a half. Freshman linebacker Kodie McNamara added six tackles while junior cornerback Hugo Nolasco made five stops.

For the second straight game, the Bullet offensive line did not yield a sack.

Chris Curran passed for 138 yards and a touchdown to lead Ursinus while Steve Ambs finished with 10 tackles for the Bears.

The game was delayed 16 minutes in the fourth quarter due to a thunderstorm.

Everything was clicking in the early going for the Bullets, who scored on their first possession and forced Ursinus to punt on each of its six full first-half drives.

On its first drive of the game, Gettysburg needed just six plays to move 62 yards, with Delia capping the march with a 2-yard touchdown run with 11:54 on the clock. The drive was fueled by a 19-yard run by Smith to the Ursinus-27 and a 25-yard scamper by sophomore wing Freddy Caruso to the Bear-2 on the next play.

Smith pushed Gettysburg's lead to 15-0 when the connected with Davis on a 21-yard touchdown pass with 13:08 to go in the first half, capping an 11-play, 90-yard drive. After the Bullets induced a fifth-straight punt, the Orange & Blue moved 82 yards on 10 plays, with Smith racing it in from 11 yards out to make it 22-0 with 6:12 on the clock. Smith and junior receiver Aden Twer hooked up on a 41-yard completion during the drive that placed the ball in Ursinus territory, and six plays later Smith hit Davis on fourth-and-8 to give the Bullets a first-and-goal at the 9.

The Bullets fumbled at the Ursinus-41 on their final possession of the half, but with just nine seconds left the Bears were unable to capitalize.

In the meantime, the Bullet defense held the Bears to 100 total yards in the first half, with just 27 coming on the ground, as the visitors took a 22-0 lead into the locker room.

Gettysburg received the opening kickoff in the second half and promptly moved 75 yards on seven plays, with Delia breaking free for a 33-yard touchdown run two minutes into the period. After an Ursinus punt, Smith found Davis for a 39-yard completion to the Bear-6, setting up a 6-yard scoring jaunt by Delia on the next play to make it 36-0 with 8:24 remaining in the third quarter.

The Bears' lone touchdown came off a Gettysburg turnover, when a punt was fumbled. On the next play, Curran connected with Darius Jones on a 29-yard scoring strike with 6:28 showing in the third quarter.

Ursinus' final four possessions resulted in a pair of punts, a fumble, and an interception. Senior safety Drew Olsen came up with his first collegiate interception with 13:19 left in the game, and he forced a fumble that was recovered by freshman defensive tackle Charles McDonald with 8:45 to go.

Gettysburg added a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns. Delia scored on a 7-yard run with 14:18 left and sophomore tailback Eddie Hutchins set the final score with a 1-yard plunge with 10:32 to go. Delia's four rushing TDs were just one shy of the school record.
