Foresters Unable to Hold Off Concordia Chicago in Season Opener/Finale

More news about: Lake Forest

The Lake Forest College and Concordia University Chicago football teams completed their season-opener that was suspended due to lightning on Saturday. Concordia Chicago came away with a 56-28 victory. Forester junior wide receiver Austin Sobey's touchdown grab before the postponement gave him a school record 13 on the season.

The Foresters started Saturday with a 28-26 lead in the middle of the second quarter. Junior quarterback Pete Scaffidi had already thrown three touchdown passes, extending his single-season school record in that category to 31, 11 more than the previous mark. His 238 completions and 2,910 passing yards also shattered the previous team records.

Among Scaffidi's touchdown passes was a 17-yarder to Sobey. Since the game was finished on Saturday, that score counted toward the wideout's season statistics and broke the school record set by Chris Jensen in 1983 and matched by Jeff Huebner in 2005. Sobey finished the game with a team-high five recptions for 49 yards and completed the season with 55 catches for 752 yards.

Senior Kevin Davis had an 80-yard touchdown reception before the lightning storm on September 3. He added four more catches for 21 yards on Saturday, extending his program record for receiving yards in a season to 1,286, well ahead of Heubner's previous record of 1,002. He also tied wide receivers coach Dan Carter's school record of 77 reception set in 2009.

Junior tailback finished the game with 133 yards on 13 carries, including an 80-yard touchdown early in the game. His 940 rushing yards on the season is the fifth-highest total in team history.

Senior safety Luke Butts had a team-high 12 tackles in the game and led the Foresters this season with 80 stops. He finished his career ranked fourth in program history with 329 tackles.

Other Lake Forest records set this season include freshman kicker Donnie Caldwell's 31 extra points, which actually tied the mark set by Pat Dunne in 1999. The team also set records for passing (303.2) and total (436.8) yards per game and 32.7 points per contest.

The Foresters finished the year with a 3-7 overall record and a 3-6 mark in Midwest Conference play. Concordia Chicago, co-champion of the Northern Athletics Conference, finished 8-2.
