Statesmen sack Dutchmen 41-24

More news about: Hobart

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—Hobart registered a season-high eight sacks and rode a 20-point second quarter to a 41-24 Liberty League football victory at Union this afternoon. Sophomore linebacker Devin Worthington led the defensive charge with a game-high 10 tackles, including 3.5 sacks.

Worthington spent the afternoon in the Union backfield, posting the most sacks in a game by a Statesman since Andy Purdie logged 3.5 at Merchant Marine on Oct. 14, 2006. Classmate Austin DiMarco added eight tackles, while Tyre Coleman logged seven tackles that included two sacks, giving him a team-leading 6.5 on the year. Senior cornerback Drake Woodard added two interceptions.

Hobart quarterback Nick Strang (11-for-23) passed for 187 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 74 yards with a rushing TD. Junior Woodard had 96 yards on three catches and a score, while Steven Webb rushed for 85 yards and touchdown.

Union receiver Connor Gallo had 101 yards and a touchdown on four catches, while Justin Gallo had 72 yards on five catches with two scores. Darnel Thomas rushed for 85 yards and quarterback Drew Connolly had 16 completions on 26 attempts for 246 yards and threeTDs. Kevin Quillinan and Steve Modliszewski each had seven tackles for the Dutchmen.

Justin Gallo caught a 10-yard pass from Connolly to open the scoring with 9:30 left in the first quarter, capping a 10-play, 73-yard drive off the opening kickoff. Hobart tied it with 1:29 left in the quarter when on the first play from scrimmage, Webb broke free for a season-long 70-yard  touchdown run. Union answered three plays later, when Connolly found Connor Gallo for a 61-yard touchdown and a 14-7 lead with six seconds remaining in the quarter. Union had the ball for 11:57 of the first quarter.

The Statesmen tied it with 7:35 left in the second quarter. Bobby Dougherty rushed for a 9-yard score to complete a six-play, 42-yard drive in 3:47. Union punted with 4:32 left but Hobart fumbled the return at the Statesmen 22-yard line and Joshua Rose recovered for the Dutchmen. They took a 17-14 lead four plays later on Adam Henry's career best 39-yard field goal with 1:58 remaining in the half. After the kickoff, back came Hobart with a first play, 83-yard touchdown pass to Junior Woodard for a 21-17 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Union fumbled the return at its own 15 and James Smith picked it up and ran it in for a 27-17 lead. That score went into halftime.

Strang's 15-yard touchdown pass to Troy Robinson with 6:27 left in the third made it 34-17, on a drive set up by a Drake Woodard interception and 45-yard return. The scoring drive took eight-plays to cover the final 35 yards in 3:37.

Union closed to 34-24 with a Justin Gallo 38-yard strike from Connolly with just 41 seconds elapsed in the fourth quarter. It was a four-play, 47-yard drive that took 1:15. Connor Beerworth intercepted a pass for Union and returned it 21 yards to the Hobart 49 with 10:33 left, but the Dutchmen didn't capitalize, turning the ball over on downs at the Hobart 28. Strang's 5-yard scoring run capped the day's scoring with 1:19 left. The 11-play, 72-yard drive ate up 5:42 and provided the final margin.

Hobart, idle next week, is back in action Oct. 22, hosting league rival Merchant Marine at 1 p.m.
