Toms click in all phases in 63-7 win over Johnnies

Senior QB Dakota Tracy threw five touchdown passes and the No. 3-ranked Tommies raced to a 35-0 lead in the game's first 20:15 en route to a 63-7 victory over St. John's in MIAC football play at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul.

UST's 29-year-old stadium attendance record was snapped. A crowd of 10,421 on a sunny October day witnessed the Tommies (5-0 overall, 3-0 MIAC) run their regular-season win streak to 19 and achieve back-to-back wins over St. John's for the first time since 1986 and 1987.

UST's 63 points tied a modern record set in 1989 against Augsburg and in 2009 against Hamline. It matches the most points in one game by a Tommie team since 1914.

St. Thomas recorded their first home-field victory over the Johnnies since 1992, ending a seven-game O'Shaughnessy losing streak in the series. It was just the third win over St. John's in the last 19 meetings. The 56-point winning margin and 63 points scored were St. Thomas bests in the 80-all-time meetings against the archrival Johnnies.

The Tommie defense had 13 tackles for loss, including seven sacks.

Prior to Saturday, senior Fritz Waldvogel had scored at least one TD against every MIAC team except St. John's. Waldvogel made up for that Saturday as he caught three touchdown passes, two on one-arm grabs, covering 31, 25 and 12 yards. He also broke the UST career all-purpose yards record with 141 yards on 10 touches. He snapped a 1988-1990 record of 6,044 all-purpose yards held by Gary Trettel.

Tracy, whose five TD passes were one off the school record, completed 12-of-15 for 192 yards with no interceptions in playing just three quarters. He guided UST to a 6-for-6 conversion rate with touchdowns in the red zone.

Colin Tobin rushed 24 times for 146 yards and two short TD runs.

The Tommies'  Tony Danna had three sacks, a forced fumble, eight solos, and 4.5 tackles for loss. Willy Baregi had an interception, a forced fumble, a sack, two tackles for loss and five solos. Harry Pitera blocked a punt that led to Jack Gavin's 12-yard return for a TD. Pitera also had a fumble recovery and eight tackles.

Junior PK Tim Albright tied a school record as he converted 9-of-9 PAT kicks and extended his streak of made PATs to 54 dating back to October 2010.

Three Johnnie QBs combined to pass for 189 yards, going 22-of-41 with two intercepted. Connor Bruns was 13-of-27 for 144 yards. Brent Graboski caught seven passes for 71 yards.

St. Thomas is tied for the MIAC lead with Augsburg at 3-0 and plays the Auggies in Minneapolis next Saturday.
