More news about: Guilford

LEXINGTON, Va. – Luke Heinsohn ran for 167 yards and four touchdowns on just 12 carries in Washington and Lee University's 63-0 victory over visiting Guilford College Saturday. The Generals forced six turnovers in winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams.

Heinsohn scored on first-quarter runs of three and 23 yards as Washington and Lee took a 21-0 lead 5:45 into the contest. The Generals used just six offensive plays to score their 21 points thanks to two Guilford miscues and a short punt that gave the hosts excellent field position.

Heinsohn had a 63-yard run in the midst of Washington and Lee's 28-point second quarter and added a two-yard scoring run on the Generals' opening possession of the second half, which opened a 56-0 cushion.

Washington and Lee senior quarterback Charlie Westfal ran for two touchdowns and passed for another in just over two quarters of work. He rushed for 23 yards and completed two-of-three passes for 71 yards. His 34-yard touchdown pass to Russell Stewart early in the second quarter opened a 28-0 margin. Westfal gave way to Nick Lombardo for the second half and the sophomore completed all four pass attempts to help the Generals roll up 535 total offensive yards.

Guilford played minus starting quarterback Zac Halbert for the second straight game as he recovers from a foot injury. Backups Grady Gamble and converted receiver Brandon Thompson combined to complete 10-of-24 passes for 47 yards with four interceptions. Rookie Josh Williams gained 71 rushing yards on 20 carries and teammate Lawrence Blake made four receptions for 19 yards. The Generals limited Guilford wideout Ben King to one catch for -3 yards. The redshirt junior entered the game ranked among the top-eight Division III leaders in receptions and receiving yards per game.

Defensively, Guilford rookie linebacker Robert Smith made a game- and career-high 12 tackles, two behind the line of scrimmage. He also blocked a second-quarter punt.

The Quakers return home to host Southern Virginia University Saturday (10/8) at 1:00 p.m. in the Armfield Athletic Center.
