Hopkins Moves to 3-0 with 41-0 Win at Moravian

More news about: Johns Hopkins

BETHLEHEM, PA - Senior quarterback Hewitt Tomlinthrew for 243 yards and three touchdowns and visiting Johns Hopkins held host Moravian to just 194 yards of total offense as the Blue Jays rolled to a 41-0 victory over the Greyhounds at Rocco Calvo Field Saturday afternoon. The win is JHU's eighth straight dating back to last season and improves Hopkins' record to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference. Moravian falls to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Centennial.

The eight-game winning streak is the third-longest in Johns Hopkins history. JHU has twice won 11 games in row in its history.

Johns Hopkins needed just over two minutes midway through the first quarter to turn a scoreless tie into a 13-0 lead. After forcing a Moravian punt on the opening possession of the game, the Blue Jays methodically moved 64 yards on eight plays and capped their opening drive with an 11-yard touchdown run by junior Jonthan Rigaud to go up 7-0.

After a quick three-and-out by the Greyhounds, the Blue Jays needed just one play to go 74 yards as Tomlin froze the defense with a perfect play-fake and found sophomore Dan Wodicka five yards behind the defense at midfield and Wodicka out-raced the Moravian secondary to the end zone to push the lead to 13-0.

The 13-point lead held until late in the second quarter when the Blue Jays moved 89 yards in seven plays to push the lead to 20-0 at the half. Rigaud and senior Tyler Porco did most the damage on the ground before Tomlin lofted a strike to junior Scott Cremensfrom 41 yards out to account for the scoring play. Moravian's Travis King had great coverage on the play, but Tomlin dropped it in over the top and Cremens went up and got the ball just past King's out-stretched hands for the score.

The Blue Jays maintained the 20-point lead until late in the third quarter, when they scored twice in a three-minute span to extend the lead to 34-0.

Hopkins went to the ground for the first of the two third-quarter touchdowns as they took over at their own 43-yard line after a Greyhound punt and covered all but nine of 57 yards via the rush to make it 27-0. Rigaud accounted for 27 yards on the drive and junior Scott Barlettawent over from the one to polish off the drive, which took just over two minutes.

A sack and forced fumble by junior P.J. Caufieldon Moravian's ensuing possession set the Blue Jays up at the Moravian 25 with three minutes remaining and Tomlin capped his day with a six-yard touchdown pass to Cremens to give the Blue Jays the 34-point advantage.

Hopkins closed out the scoring early in the fourth quarter and again the drive was set up by a turnover as sophomore John Arena's interception of Robbie Moyer gave the Blue Jays possession at the Moravian 41. Nine plays and 41 yards later sophomore Gary Sharpclosed the scoring with a one-yard run - Sharp accounted for 31 of the Blue Jays' 41 yards on the drive.

Tomlin finished 19-of-33 for the 243 yards and three touchdowns with Wodicka leading the receiving corps with five receptions for 112 yards and the one score. Cremens scored on half of his four catches and totaled 56 yards.

With their 471 yards, the Blue Jays went over 450 yards of total offense for the third straight time this season and the eighth straight time dating back to last season. JHU totaled 269 yards passing and 202 yards rushing with Rigaud accounting for a team-high 69 yards on just 11 carries.

Moravian quarterback Matt Johnson was 7-of-17 for 74 yards and rushed for a team-high 49 yards before leaving the game in the third quarter. Moyer was just 1-of-8 for 4 yards with the one interception. He was also sacked twice.

The Johns Hopkins defense held the `Hounds to just 194 yards of total offense just one week after holding Susquehanna to just 179. This is the first time since late in the 2009 season that Hopkins has held back-to-back opponents to less than 200 yards. In three games this season, Johns Hopkins has allowed just two offensive touchdowns on 41 opponent possessions.

Johns Hopkins will return to action next Saturday when the Blue Jays return to Homewood Field for a key Centennial Conference game against Muhlenberg. The Blue Jays and Mules were two of the three teams that shared the Centennial Conference title last season and are the only two teams in the league that have yet to lose a Centennial Conference game this season.
