R-MC Earns 36-29 Victory over Shenandoah

More news about: Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, VA -- Randolph-Macon College Football got a three yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion from Thaddeus Scruggs with 4:37 to go in the game to come away with a 36-29 victory over visiting Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.

Scruggs ran for 119 yards and two scores on the day for R-MC, which is now 3-0 for the second consecutive year and just the second time since the 1986 season. Shenandoah, which will join the ODAC next season, drops to 1-2 on the season.

A Jeremy Bowry interception set up the Jackets for the first score of the game when he picked off SU quarterback Daniel Wright and it returned to the Hornets 12 yard line. Three plays later, Jackets quarterback Zac Naccarato scored on an eight yard bootleg.

SU scored its first touchdown of the day on the first play of the second quarter when Wright found Rico Wallace on a 27 yard touchdown pass.

A 14 yard run by Scruggs pushed the Jackets ahead 14-7 and capped a 12 play, 69 yard drive with just 1:15 to go in the half.

The Hornets got the kick off and answered right back 59 seconds later, when Wright found Qiydaar Murphy on a 15 yard scoring strike, sending the teams to the locker room tied 14-14.

After holding R-MC on its first possession of the second half, SU needed just three plays before Wright hooked up with Wallace for a 53 yard pass to push SU ahead 21-14.

On R-MC's ensuing possession, Scruggs ran the ball six times for 47 yards and Naccarato found the end zone on an eight yard scramble to tie the game.

A Chris Pace interception of Wright later in the third quarter gave R-MC the ball at the one yard line and Naccarato plunged for in for the score to pull R-MC ahead 28-21 with just under four minutes to go in the third quarter.

Shenandoah was able to cut the lead to 28-23 on a safety with just over 10 minutes to play and then took the ball back and drove 60 yards on five plays, making the score 29-28.

R-MC took over on its ensuing drive and used five straight runs by Drake Sanders to moved 34 yards down to the Shenandoah 15 yard line. From there, Scruggs rushed for a 12 yard gain, then the three yard scamper that proved to be the game-winner.

Bowry finished the day with nine tackles, including eight solo. David Fetter and Patrick Moses each had eight stops on the day as well for R-MC.

Randolph-Macon will cap its ODAC schedule next Saturday after Frostburg State. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
