Fast start fuels Tommies' home victory
Senior Colin Tobin had four first-half touchdowns to help the Tommies build a 35-0 halftime lead en route to a 49-14 victory over visiting St. Olaf in the MIAC opener for both teams Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
No. 4-rated St. Thomas (3-0 overall, 1-0 MIAC) ran its regular-season win streak to 17 games. The Toms rolled up 443 yards and punted just once, and on defense had four sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. St. Thomas overcame four turnovers.
The Oles (2-1, 0-1) were held to 29 net yards in the first half, but gained 233 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns in the final two quarters.
UST senior Fritz Waldvogel added 228 all-purpose yards on 10 touches, scored two TDs, and became the school's career receiving yards leader. Waldvogel had a 65-yard TD reception and a 40-yard punt return to the Oles' one-yard line.
Tommie junior Chinni Oji had an interception and 24-yard return, plus eight tackles.
Senior QB Dakota Tracy competed 11-of-15 passes for 186 yards and two TDs with one interception.
Tobin has eight touchdowns in the last two games and 35 on his career. He had 114 yards of offense (80 rushing, 34 receiving). It was his 21st career game with 70 or more rushing yards.
UST junior Tim Albright had three kickoffs result in touchbacks and made all six PAT kicks. Albright has converted 39 in a row over his last 10 games.
St. Olaf QB Dan Dobson was 17-of-24 for 160 yards with one touchdown and two intercepted. Jake Schmiesing caught four passes for 65 yards and added two PAT kicks in relief on injured starter Jason Obarski. Stephen Asp added three catches for 73 yards and a leaping touchdown.
The Oles' Nick Branjard had six solo tackles, a break up and an interception.
