Unbeaten Spartans Win Convincingly
DUBUQUE, Iowa - A slow start had the Spartans fighting from behind before they began to click in the second quarter en route to a dominating 67-20 victory over Anderson University at home in front of a large crowd on the Fourth Annual Light Up Chalmers game.
It was night for balanced team output with the Spartans finishing with 31 first downs in the victory. A night which saw three quarterbacks pass for 461 yards and seven touchdowns while the Spartans gained 147 yards on the ground to end with 608 yards of offense. The defense intercepted four passes and sacked the quarterback twice holding Anderson to 120 yards rushing.
UD began the night not the way Coach Stan Zweifel wanted, after turning the ball over in four of their first five possessions with two fumbles and two interceptions. Whatever Zweifel said to his squad, it worked as the Spartans scored in the next six out of seven possessions to jump out to a large lead by the third quarter. The potent offense of the Spartans scored 34 points in the second quarter and 20 more in the third quarter to extend the lead to 61-13 after three quarters. Both teams added a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Wyatt Hanus led the Spartans with 397 yards and five touchdowns as he completed 28-34 pass attempts. Zach Fry completed 4-5 attempts for 54 yards and a touchdown and Matt Levin completed 1-1 passes for 10 yards and a touchdown. Michael Zweifel led the receiving corps with 13 grabs for 237 yards and three touchdowns. Demacus Fleming finished with 127 yards on seven catches and two touchdowns. His longest being a 60 yard TD with just over four minutes left of the opening half of play. Seven Spartans caught passes with four scoring.
Trevor Runkle led the defense with nine tackles including a 38 yard touchdown interception return as time was expiring in the second quarter. Trevor Kinnet intercepted two passes and returned a total of 106 yards, narrowly missing a touchdown return after being knocked out of bounds on the three yard line. He has three interceptions on the season.
The Spartans remain unbeaten with a unblemished 2-0 record. UD will host the Loras College Duhawks next week under the lights with the game to be broadcast live on KCRG in Cedar Rapids. The battle for the Key to the City is scheduled to kick-off at 6:00 p.m. and will be on digital channel 9.2 and channel 109 on Mediacom.
