Choctaws Finish Season with 28-17 Loss to McMurry

CLINTON, MS - The Mississippi College football team finished the 2010 season with a 28-17 loss to McMurry University on Saturday afternoon at Robinson-Hale Stadium.  The Choctaws finish the season with a 4-6 record, while McMurry ends the campaign with a 6-4 mark, their first winning season since 2000.

The Choctaws honored 21 seniors playing in their final home games at Robinson-Hale Stadium.

The McMurry defense lived up to their billing of the ASC's best, holding the MC offense to just 190 total yards, their lowest output of the season.  The Choctaws punted the ball a season-high seven times, as well.

Quarterbacks Tommy Reyer and Austin Gray were under pressure all day, as the Choctaws allowed a season-high eight sacks in the contest.

McMurry opened the scoring with a 31-yard touchdown pass from third-string quarterback Landry Gunter to R.J. Long with 6:16 remaining in the first quarter.  Gunter completed completed 27 of 38 passes for four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Eric Shaffer extended the lead to 14-0 with a 48-yard touchdown reception from Gunter.

The Choctaws got on the scoreboard at the beginning of the second quarter when backup quarterback Gray connected with Randal Pharr for a two-yard score.  The freshman Gray entered the game at the end of the first quarter and completed six of 14 passes for 89 yards.

McMurry answered back as Long caught his second touchdown pass of the day with 2:57 remaining in the first half.  Long caught seven passes for 93 yards and two scores, while Marcus Franklin caught eight balls for 60 yards and a score.

Sophomore Chris Campbell gave MC momentum heading into halftime with a 47-yard field goal as time expired.

McMurry opened the second half by extending the lead to 28-10 with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Gunter to Franklin.

The Choctaws would finish the scoring with a six-yard touchdown reception by Brian Richardson from Reyer.

Austin Brooks led the rushing attack for McMurry with 108 yards on 26 carries, while freshman Bobby Muse paced MC with 44 rushing yards.
