W&L Football Falls to Averett, 20-10

LEXINGTON, Va. – Averett University scored all 20 of its points in the fourth quarter to post a 20-10 victory over the Washington and Lee football team on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Generals (1-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead just 5:05 into the game when junior quarterback Charlie Westfal (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) capped a 10-play, 83-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run.

W&L forced three Averett (2-1) turnovers in the first half and maintained its' 7-0 lead until junior placekicker Peter Alston (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) booted a 37-yard field goal to give the Generals a 10-0 advantage with 2:49 remaining in the third quarter.

The Cougars scored their first points on a 45-yard field goal by sophomore placekicker Brad Scott (Rocky Mount, N.C./Nash Central) just 48 seconds into the final period and knotted the game at 10-10 with a 12-play, 71-yard drive that resulted in a 1-yard touchdown run by senior running back James Wilson (Los Angeles, Calif./John Marshall) at the 6:19 mark.

Following a W&L three-and-out on the next possession, the Generals' punt traveled just nine yards setting Averett up on the W&L 25-yardline.  Five plays later with 2:06 remaining, Scott nailed a 33-yard field goal to give the Cougars their first lead of the game at 13-10.

Averett senior safety Jeremy Clifton (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) then intercepted Westfal and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown with 1:36 remaining to put the game away.

Sophomore running back Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant) paced the Washington and Lee offense with his second-straight 100-yard performance, gaining 129 yards on 20 carries.  Westfal completed 8-of-15 passes for 112 yards and one interception and rushed for seven yards and one touchdown.  Defensively, W&L limited the Cougars to just 221 yards and forced three turnovers.  Sophomore linebacker Jesse Jenkins (Roanoke, Va./William Fleming) led the way with 13 tackles, while sophomore linebacker Doug Fraser (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) posted nine tackles and one interception.

Wilson spearheaded the Averett offense with 116 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries.  Senior wide receiver Jeremy Dixon (Hawthorne, Fla./Hawthorne) caught four passes for 53 yards, while senior quarterback Cody Ladutko (Harrisburg, N.C./Central Cabarris) and first-year quarterback Kirkland Brown (Lexington, N.C./Central Davidson) combined to complete 8-of-15 passes for 87 yards with a pair of interceptions.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Guilford College for a 1:00 pm contest.
