Pacific's Spencer Bell Named NWC Special Teams Student-Athlete Of The Week
FOREST GROVE – A good day of work for Pacific punter Spencer
Bell (Fr., Gresham, Ore.) on Saturday has earned the freshman
selection as the Northwest Conference's Football Special Teams
Student-Athlete of the Week. The honor, selected by the
conference's sports information directors, was announced on
Tuesday.
Bell becomes the second Pacific special teamer selected for conference honors in the first three weeks of the reinstated Boxer football program. Kicker Jon Lee (Sr., Kahalu'u, Hawaii) was honored during the first week of the season.
"It is great to have our second Special Teams Student-Athlete of the Week in this first season," said Pacific Head Coach Keith Buckley. "Special teams play a great role in the success of a football program and we are encouraged by the progress we've made in a short period. Spencer is continually going to improve with more experience and this award is a testament to how hard he's worked as a freshman to become a very good college punter."
Bell played a key role for the Boxers in their loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, punting five times for a total of 184 yards. He averaged 36.8 yards per punt, including a long punt of 50 yards in the third quarter that pinned the Stags on their own 9-yard-line. Three of his five punts went over 30 yards. Pacific lost the game to the Stags 37-9 in the Boxers' first home game in 19 years. It was just the second game of the reinstated program, which began play on Sept. 4 at Puget Sound.
Bell enters the week as one of the top punters in the conference. His average of 38.9 yards per punt in two games ranks second in the NWC and 43rd nationally among NCAA Division III punters.
The Boxers will have a bye week before beginning their first Northwest Conference season since 1984. Pacific will play at Lewis & Clark on Sat., Oct. 2, with a 1:45 p.m. kickoff at Griswold Stadium in Portland.
