ONU Tops Otterbein 34-10

WESTERVILLE, OHIO—The 11th-ranked Ohio Northern football team scored on its first two possessions then held 18th-ranked Otterbein scoreless in the second half to win 34-10 Saturday in Memorial Stadium.

The Polar Bears improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The Cardinals dropped to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.

Northern set the tone of the game at the outset, taking the opening drive 91 yards for a score, a 4-yard pass to senior tight end Evan Elliott from senior quarterback Kyle Simmons, to lead 7-0 with 11:15 to play in the first quarter.

The Polar Bears struck again on their next possession, this time covering 69 yards, capped off by a Simmons 4-yard pass to senior split end Brook Crawford to extend their lead to 14-0 with 3:30 remaining in the first period. The two ONU scoring drives consumed nearly 10 minutes of the first quarter.

Otterbein fought its way back into the game, mounting an 8-play, 69-yard drive that resulted in a 26-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Austin Schlosser to wide receiver Fortinel Faustin to make it 14-7 with 14:54 to play in the first half.

The two teams traded field goals, and Ohio Northern took a 17-10 lead into the locker room at the break.

Ohio Northern added 17 more points in the second half, which included a 5-yard touchdown run from senior running back Brent Donley and a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown by senior cornerback Justin Henck. Otterbein committed four turnovers in the second half.

Simmons, completing 21 of 31 pass attempts, finished the day with 190 passing and 52 rushing yards. Donley rushed for 97 yards on 28 carries.

Schlosser completed 11 of 24 pass attempts for 101 yards and one touchdown. Otterbein senior running back Colton Coy rushed for 86 yards on 20 carries.

Otterbein junior safety Dominic Jones led both teams with 14 tackles, including three for a loss of six yards. Junior cornerback Matt Ross and senior cornerback Anthony Korpieski each had an interception for the Cardinals.

Henck made two interceptions for Ohio Northern.

Otterbein continues OAC play, traveling to Heidelberg next Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff. The two teams will be playing for the Rhine River Cup.
