The Series: The Buccaneers and Pioneers are meeting for the 37th
time in a series Beloit leads 19-16 with one tie. BU snapped a
five-game CU winning streak in the series last year. Before that
2009 win, CU had won eight of the last ten meetings. The teams
first met near the end of the 1907 season, a 12-11 Beloit
victory.
Buccaneers Last Time Out: The Beloit College Football team got
an 11-season monkey off their back last Saturday afternoon at
Strong Stadium, defeating St. Norbert College 34-31. Mat Kahl
kicked a 22-yard field goal with six seconds left to give Beloit
the win, their first over the Green Knights since the 1998 season.
The Bucs went seven plays for 65 yards in 47 seconds after SNC had
tied the game up with a 29-yard field goal. The Buccaneers jumped
out to a 14-0 lead less than nine minutes into the game. Brian
Maughn hit Julian Ross with a 30-yard scoring pass six minutes in
and then, after Vince Salucci intercepted a pass on the Green
Knight's first play from scrimmage, Terence Steward rushed in from
20 yards away with 6:48 left in the opening quarter. SNC got on the
board at the 3:53 mark on a two-yard run to make it 14-7. Beloit
answered that score at the 12:35 mark of the second quarter on a
Maughn to Derek Carrier 20-yard scoring play. SNC pulled back to
within a touchdown with 1:19 remaining in the half on a 36-yard
pass but, the Bucs had the last word of the half when Kahl kicked a
37-yard field goal at the buzzer, making it 24-14, Beloit, at the
break. St. Norbert cut the lead to 24-21 at 8:11 of the third on a
14-yard pass for the only scoring of the quarter. Back-and-forth
possessions dominated the next 20 minutes of play until a TD pass
from seven yards out gave the Green Knights a 28-24 advantage with
3:06 left. The Buccaneers answered quickly, less than a minute
later, when Maughn hit Odin Grina on a 69-yard scoring pass to give
the lead back to Beloit at 31-28 with 2:07 left, setting up the
hectic final minute. Maughn was 28-36 for 357 with one interception
and the three TDs for the Bucs. Carrier and Grina each had 108
receiving yards while Ross had 102 on his team-leading nine
catches. Terence Steward rushed for 106 yards on 15 carries.
Defensively for the Bucs Tony Baratti had 14 total tackles while
Michael Underwood, who also had a drive-ending interception in the
end zone, had nine stops.
Last Time vs. the Pioneers: The Buccaneers made their 2009 home
debut and opened the MWC season on Saturday, September 12, at
Strong Stadium as they knocked off Carroll University 25-7 in front
of 1,200 fans. Terence Steward got things rolling for the Buccaneer
offense, scoring on a two-yard run to cap a 67-yard drive, less
than four minutes into the contest. The Pioneers drew even five
minutes later to close out the opening quarter at 7-all. The
Buccaneers took control in the second quarter, with Steward going
in from three yards out 7:40 and 3:11 before the half to make it
19-7, Beloit, at the break. Beloit made it 18 unanswered points at
the 6:51 mark of the third quarter when Brian Maughn scored from
ten yards out to finish up a ten-play, 78-yard drive. The teams
were scoreless in the fourth quarter. The Bucs finished with 419
yards of offense, 244 through the air and 175 on the ground, while
holding CU to 209 total yards. Maughn passed for all 244 yards
while Steward had 105 yards on the ground. Derek Carrier had seven
catches for 127 yards. The defense was far from quiet in the game.
Tony Baratti had eight tackles, a forced fumble and an
interception, which he returned for 16 yards, to lead the way while
Eric Ritts, Quentin Layne and Kyle Hansgen all recorded sacks.
Vince Salucci had three pass defenses and blocked a field goal
try.

Saturday broke his own Beloit single-game record of 27, which he
set at Illinois College last season (10/17/09). He is also now tied
for fifth in career passing TDs with 25 (Joe Herfel, 1998-2001),
and is just 16 yards away from taking over the #5 career spot in
passing yardage (Jeremy Warren, 3,368, 1993-95)…Mat
Kahl's 37-yard field goal as the first-half clock expired
Saturday was a career-best. His previous best was 35 yards last
season against Grinnell College (11/7/09)…Julian Ross, with
his 102 receiving yards Saturday, is now just 21 yards away from
taking over the top spot in career receiving yardage (Mike
Meteyard, 2,180, 1993-96)…Tony Baratti is now third on the
all-time tackles list with 351 (David Bilek, 367, 2003-06 & Dan
Marsh, 360, 2003-06)…
Up Ahead for the Bucs: The Bucs return home for the annual
Homecoming Game at Strong Stadium on September 25, hosting Knox
College. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. They then play back-to-back road
games to begin the second month of the season, at Grinnell College
on October 2, and at Lake Forest College on October 9.
