FDU-Florham Devils
2009 Preview
2008 Record
3-7 .300 Overall
1-6 .143 Conference

Location: Madison, NJ
Head Coach: Rich Mosca (West Liberty State '70)
Stadium (cap.): Robert T. Shields (3000)
Conference: MAC
Region: East 2009 Schedule
The College at Florham Devils won two out of their first three games in 2008 for the second consecutive year and started out with a 3-3 record for the first time since 1999 when the Devils jumped out to a 4-3 start. One of those three wins was a 19-14 triumph at home against then Fourteenth-Ranked Delaware Valley.
Head Coach Rich Mosca enters his eighth season at the helm of the FDU football program and he and his staff brought in over 70 new faces in 2009 to try to build the squad's depth. Mosca is hoping that FDU's added depth will help them sustain their the hot starts they have had in recent years.

Offense

The offense will once again be led by senior quarterback and captain Bill Winters (Brick, NJ). Last season, Winters led the team in both passing and rushing as he compiled 1,958 yards and 11 touchdowns through the air while gaining 605 yards and another 10 touchdowns on the ground. Winters' 2008 season was a special one has he had one of the most prolific years in FDU football history. He now ranks fourth All-Time in in single-season passing yards, first All-Time in single-season passing attempts, first All-Time in single-season completions, and first All-Time in single-season completion percentage while being tied for first All-Time in single-season rushing touchdowns. Junior Matt Jeffers (Burlington, NJ) will once again serve as the primary back-up.
After the loss of Second Team All-Conference wide receiver Rob Eck, senior wide receiver and captain Kyle Bukowiec (Howell, NJ) will be counted on to increase his production. Last season, he finished with 51 catches for 581 yards and four touchdowns. Also there to pick up the load will be Second Team All-Conference senior tight end Beau Reed (Ocean, NJ). Reed had 19 receptions for 272 yards and a score in 2008. Junior wide receivers Louis Pietrangelo (Colonia, NJ) (9 catches, 69 yards) and Andrew Scamporino (Secaucus, NJ) (4 receptions, 69 yards) will be given the opportunity to step into the second receiver role
The running back spot is up for grabs between three juniors, Brendon Griffin (Riverside, NJ), Sean Norton (Lincoln Park, NJ) and Bayshawn Wells (Lawrence, NJ). Last year, Griffin ran for 82 yards, Norton gained 80 yards and a touchdown, and Wells had 48 yards. Junior Alex Farinich (Hampton, NJ) will again be the fullback.
Two starters on the offensive line, junior left tackle James Sullivano (Howell, NJ) and sophomore guard Chris Hamilton (Flemington, NJ), will return in 2009. Sullivano will be counted on to provide leadership for a young line. Joining them will be sophomore transfer Jon O'Boyle (Wayne, NJ) at center, sophomore Justin Moore (Mt. Laurel, NJ) at guard, and junior Rich Killmer (Bayonne, NJ) returning from injury to play tackle.

Defense

The FDU defense will lose three First Team All-Conference performers in 2009 as defensive tackle Kevin Hatcher-Puryear, defensive end Rob Roberts and outside linebacker Vinny Russo all graduated.
The strength of the defense should be the secondary as they return three out of four starters from a year ago. Junior corner Matt Poricelli (Howell, NJ) led the team with two interceptions and eight passes broken up while his bookend partner, senior corner Mike Franchino (East Brunswick, NJ), had one pick and four passes broken up. Senior safety Jason Glezman (Lincroft, NJ) returns after finishing second on the team with 66 tackles a year ago. Senior Dan Labrutto (Brick, NJ) will step into the other safety spot after getting extensive playing time in the nickel and dime packages last season. Senior Tim Poss (Manchester, NJ) and sophomore Steven Margolin (Kenilworth, NJ) will be the reserves at cornberback while juniors Marcus Hedgemond (Burlington, NJ) and Gino Abbate (Port Reading, NJ) will back-up the safeties.
Senior defensive tackle and captain Nick Cusanelli (Brick, NJ) will lead the front four after recording 46 tackles, 6.5 for loss, in 2008. Senior George Gibson (Hazlet, NJ) steps into a starting position at defensive end after backing up both end spots last year. Junior Kevin Horn (Colonia, NJ) will be the other starting defensive tackle after serving as the primary reserve a year ago, while senior James Gartland (Baldwin, NY) enters camp as the other starter at defensive end. Sophomores John DiIorio (Westfield, NJ) and Gilbert Taylor (Salem, NJ) will crack the rotation at end and tackle, respectively.
The linebacker corp will be the most inexperienced unit with senior outside linebacker and captain Anthony DelConte (Garwood, NJ) being the only player who has seen extensive playing time. DelConte had 23 tackles, 3.5 for loss, a season ago. Joining him on the outside will be sophomore transfer Steve Hoverson (Middletown, NJ). Junior Ian Moore (Haddon Heights, NJ) enters the season as the frontrunner to be the starting middle linebacker. Sophomore Ryan Daly (Tinton Falls, NJ) will see playing time as a reserve.

Special Teams

FDU lost both their kicker and punter from 2008 and junior John Hancock (Freehold, NJ) will look to hold off the competition to handle both jobs in 2009. Sophomore Don Fisher (Maple Shade, NJ) steps into the long snapping duties while Wells will once again handle the kick and punt return responsibilities. In 2008, Wells returned to 21 kicks for an average of 23.8 yards with a long of 57 while taking back 13 punts for a 5.5 yard average.
