Wrapup: W&L, Adrian go OT for AQ

Luke Heinsohn ran for 192 yards and kicked the game-winning field goal to boot.

Washington and Lee clinched the automatic bid from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in wild and dramatic fashion, as the Generals defeated Hampden-Sydney 45-42 in four overtimes.

Luke Heinsohn kicked a 37-yard field goal in the fourth overtime, capping a day in which he ran for 192 yards and four touchdowns for the Generals, who improved to 7-2, 5-1 in the ODAC.

Adrian clinched the automatic bid from the MIAA in overtime as well, as the Bulldogs stopped Albion's two-point conversion attempt in the first overtime to hold on for a 20-19 win. Spencer Krauss returned for Albion at quarterback but was just 5-for-14 passing, while his Adrian counterpart, Tony Copacia, was 22 for 32 for 269 yards and two touchdowns.

The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference automatic bid race had a little overtime of its own, but not on the field. With Greenville defeating Northwestern (Minn.) 27-16 and St. Scholastica winning 28-21 at Minnesota-Morris, the conference ends in a three-way tie. St. Scholastica's name was drawn at random to win the tiebreaker and automatic bid.

Nick Williams rushed for 143 yards and threw two of his three touchdown passes to Kurt Monix as Manchester upset Hanover, 35-34. But the Panthers still have an opportunity to earn the HCAC's automatic bid by beating Franklin in the Victory Bell game on Saturday.

Who's in?

Here's the list of conferences whose automatic bid has been decided:

ASC: Mary Hardin-Baylor
E8: Salisbury
IIAC: Coe
LL: Hobart
MIAA: Adrian
MIAC: St. Thomas
NATHC: Concordia-Chicago
NJAC: Cortland State
NWC: Linfield
OAC: Mount Union
ODAC: Washington and Lee
UMAC: St. Scholastica
WIAC: UW-Oshkosh

Yet to be decided: Centennial, CCIW, ECFC, HCAC, MAC, MWC, NCAC, NEFC, PAC, SCIAC, USAC.

Castleton State remained unbeaten in the ECFC heading into its Week 11 meeting for the title with Mount Ida, but Mount Ida did not as the Mustangs lost 29-22 at Gallaudet. Mount Ida cut the Bison lead to seven with a touchdown and two-point conversion with 8:54 left, but Gallaudet's Tony Tatum intercepted a Mustang pass at the Bison 21-yard line with 49 seconds left to seal it. Castleton, in just its fourth year as a program, is a win away from the automatic bid after beating Husson 34-14 behind a big fourth quarter in which Castleton scored the game's final 20 points.

Melikke Van Alstyne ran for 157 yards and two touchdowns as Framingham State rolled over Worcester State, 65-21, wrapping up its berth in the NEFC title game in the conference's final year as a 16-team league. Framingham State awaits Salve Regina, which had similar success in a 45-7 win against Nichols. Mike McCarthy scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns as Bridgewater State beat Massachusetts Maritime, 31-21. At 9-1, the Bears have an outside shot at a Pool C bid. For Worcester State, Graham Asum set a Division III record with 333 yards on eight kickoff returns, including two 94-yard touchdowns.

The MAC race will come down to the final weekend. Lycoming took care of Stevenson 32-7 and Delaware Valley held off Wilkes 23-7 to keep both teams a game in the loss column behind Widener, whose game at FDU-Florham was cancelled in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Kevin Wallace caught nine passes for 183 yards and a touchdown to help Illinois College defeat Cornell 50-28. The win keeps the Blueboys tied with St. Norbert a game behind Lake Forest in the Midwest Conference, whose three-way tiebreaker comes down to quarters led. Lake Forest and St. Norbert meet next week.

Division III's version of the Big 12 had yet another offensive day. Hardin-Simmons again exploded offensively gaining 728 yards of offense and Logan Turner completed 38-of-53 passes for 559 yards and seven touchdowns in a 65-58 win against Texas Lutheran in double overtime. Texas Lutheran had 635 yards of offense in the game. Meanwhile, Louisiana College defeated Mississippi College 70-28 and Sul Ross State defeated Howard Payne 64-17 to go along with No. 2 UMHB's win.

Brad Vogel caught 20 passes for Simpson, but nobody caught the two-point conversion that would have been needed to send the game into overtime. The Storm lost to Buena Vista 29-27. Vogel had 197 yards and two touchdowns from Taylor Nelson, who went 39-for-55. Augsburg rallied from a 20-0 first-quarter deficit to win 58-41 at Macalester. Senior Jordan Kindred caught 11 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown for Eureka to finish his first season of organized football at any level, then suited up at point guard for the Red Devils in a scrimmage Saturday night. Kindred finished the football season with 64 catches for 928 yards and three TDs.

In addition to the two Top 25 cancellations in New Jersey, Kean was unable to play its game at Rowan, and SUNY-Maritime's game at Norwich was postponed because of the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and its effect on the New York City-area campuses and the teams' preparation. However, Merchant Marine (Long Island) played as scheduled at Union and scored on its first drive before losing, 51-7. Seven players scored for the Dutchmen, who capitalized on three Merchant Marine fumbles.

Also in the area, Montclair State was scheduled to play a home game against Brockport State on Sunday morning at 11:30.
