On game day, you can't top SJU
Around the Nation Keith McMillan made his first trip to Collegeville, Minn., for a St. John's home game and came away with the same impression others have -- if there's a better game-day experience in Division III football, we'd like to see it. For the uninitiated, St. John's, in central Minnesota, has the winningest coach in college football history, a natural bowl setting and crowds that average about 2,000 more than there are seats. It's an event that must be seen first-hand to be believed, and even last Saturday, with a 2-5 team in town, there were more than 10,000 packed into Clemens Stadium. Sure, we recognize that you may want to make the big time where you are, but your big time would be lucky to be mentioned in the same breath as this big time. More in this week's Around the Nation. Of course, that wasn't the only game we saw this weekend, or even the only game that mattered. We got to take in a unique event that lacked in the atmosphere department, but not in emotion and competitive spirit, in attending the UMAC's Dome Day. And for a look at the games that matter coming up, a look at where all 22 automatic bids stand as of today. That, plus a talk with John Gagliardi and Keith's take on the coach of the year in Around the Nation. | |
