Statistical spotlight
Each Monday during the regular season we look at some of the key statistical performances from the weekend in Division III football, highlighting one per region. Washington and Jefferson set two Division III records on offense on Saturday in a 62-6 win against St. Vincent. The Presidents rolled up 863 yards of total offense, breaking a 1998 mark by Westminster (Mo.) and recorded 41 first downs in the win. Chuck Grabner kicked five field goals, including two on first down, one on second down and one on third. Bobby Swallow was 16-for-19 passing for 323 yards, with Zack Zebrasky 12-for-15 for 98. John Rappel returned two interceptions for touchdowns as St. Norbert defeated Knox 49-14. The defensive scores stood out on a day in which the Knights didn’t need the ball to put points on the board -- Knox held the ball for 35:51. Rappel also had 10 tackles, two for loss. Elmhurst defensive lineman Dominic Vrettos had three sacks, two of which came during Carthage’s final comeback attempt and another of which knocked Carthage out of field goal range as the Bluejays defeated the Red Men 30-15. He finished with 10 total tackles on the day, part of an eight-sack attack for Elmhurst. Andrew Strom accounted for 365 yards of total offense, rushing for a team-high 80 yards and completing 25 of 37 passes for 285 yards in Hobart’s 45-35 win at WPI. Strom threw for three touchdowns in the victory, which evened the Statesmen’s record at 2-2. Scroll down for the weekly ATN podcast and more weekend coverage. | |

ATN's take on wild weekend It turned out there was a lot more than one big game to focus on on Saturday, once all the dust had settled. While the UW-La Crosse/UW-Whitewater game, another classic, looked like it would take all the spotlight, several other teams forced their way in by the time the night was over. What are UW-La Crosse's playoff chances like now, after taking a regional loss? How about that hit that knocked Eagles quarterback Griffin Moe out of the game? We'll run down the game of the day. But the other games are on the radar as well: St. John's struggling through the air when playing against the team coached by its former quarterback, St. John Fisher's unusual call that ended their chances at Hartwick, Linfield unable to stop the Fly offense of Willamette. So what do we make of Hartwick now, after two big wins at home and a puzzling road loss? Is College of New Jersey a team to beware of at this point? What other long streaks ended? Keith McMillan and Pat Coleman discuss all that and more in this week's Around the Nation podcast.
